Steering creaking

Hi.
There's a really annoying loud creaking/rubbing noise coming from my steering column when I turn the wheel right when stationary. Has anyone else had similar problems? Thanks.

Did you check the power steering fluid?

Yeah the fluid is fine

Then my next line of action would be to check the control arms and tie rod ends. They might be the culprit.

I've had it at my local kwik fit. They said everything looks fine apart from the top mounts were a bit dry. But the noise is coming right from the top part of the steering column.

is it audible inside more than outside the car, any other unusual symptons when you get the noise , is deffo when you turn to the right.

Yeah its more audible inside. It's quite loud aswel. It might clunk/pop if I'm slowly turning into the driveway. And yes only when I'm turning right.

have you checked the UJ on the steering column to see if its catching on something and or moving smoothly throughout its rotation, see pic part 6.

No I haven't looked myself as I wouldn't know where to start to expose all the components.

I've just been and released the steering wheel height adjustment, moved it up and down a few times, locked it back in place and the noise has reduced considerably although I did notice a bit of play left to right while it was released. Not sure if that's normal??

I have this issue too, Bisco. I added cruise control so had to take the steering wheel off, but when it went back on the cowling was rubbing against the back of the wheel and there is an annoying clicking noise when going from lock to lock. Gonna try to sort it out properly tonight, but that's what the culprit is for me and it sounds like the same in your case.
