Indicator cancelling

How do you cancel the turn indicators, if you just want to give a quick flash, or if you accidentally press them to turn, but didn't mean it?

If you push the lever back into the central position, you'd expect the indicator to switch off, but it doesn't, and just keeps going for about 5 more seconds.

How do you just turn them off?

Instead of just pushing the lever slightly, I think if you move the stalk until it clicks and then immediately cancel it, it won't do this. If you just tap it without it locking up or down it'll perform the lane change indicators, flashing 3 times so you can indicate to change lanes nice and quickly. That is, for those of us who still bother indicating when changing lanes...
