inner drive shaft boot, rubber or plastic

just one of a few threads I shall start after changing my clutch last week


Audi have two types of boot listed for the inner cvj, one rubber, the other plastic, the OD of the boots is similar, and the man at TPS said that they are interchangeable, and the plastic one is preferred

wrong!

the rubber one has a massive lip on the inside of the end that fits on the cvj, so they are not interchangeable at all.

so if you need a new inner cvj boot, have a check to see what type you have and shout at the TPS man if he tells you they are interchangeable
 
The outer I'd try and get plastic if you can. I had a rubber one fitted 18 months ago and it lasted about a year before it split! I found the outer boots a bit of more of a pain to change.

I swore my inner was plastic too? I rebuilt a shaft on the weekend actually. This tool makes using the proper OEM clips a lot easier:
