Can this be done with one of the cheap ebay scanners?
 
If the ABS light is illuminated then a scanner ( won't clear it until the fault(s) have been recifitied.

Ideal world you are better off getting VCDS as you can then guarantee the tool will work with your car.

There is no fault. I took out the glove box and disconnected the passenger airbag switch, then turned the ignition on. This has caused the airbag light to come on permanently, so it needs to be reset.
 
The cheap ones(generally handheld) can only usually reset engine fault codes. The expensive ones can access fault codes for safety systems i.e Airbag, ABS etc.

I made the same mistake as you when removing my glovebox & cost £40 to have the light reset @ a local independent garage.
