Emissions Allroad A6 auto 2.5

Hello Folks

I'm new to this, Audi's and forums
I've got the emission control light showing on my A6 Allroad 2.5 diesel auto 05 and I've read a few points already but generally what does it mean? Is it usually the EGR valve has to be cleaned or are there other likely causes?
May be you can point me to an earlier post or any advice would be appreciated.

You need to have the fault code read then report back...

By the way, I haven't had chance to get the fault codes read as suggested by adams 24 but I filled it with higher quality diesel gave it a run at 3000 rpm for 15 min and the lights gone out and been like that now since Tuesday afternoon.
