Thinking of getting my plates shortened but my personalised plate has 7 characters would it be ok to get the back one normal size and the front one shortened? As with 7 characters it's illegal as they have to shrink the numbers and letters don't they?

Thanks in advance

As you have highlighed already, it is illegal, so really it wont be ok, however people do have them done, so its upto you whether you want to take the risk and get them done, I have seen worse plates on the roads than shortened plates...they will also need to have the bs sign markings on it, so if it doesnt have that, which it wont as they will be 'show plates' this could be enough to get you a fine.

I think you'd be unlucky to get stopped with a shortened front plate, so long as the rear is legal. I've been running an illegally spaced front plate on my Passat for 15 years, and said plate is now on my A6, never had an issue. The carpark cameras can still read the front plate no problems on my car also.
