Hi,
My 2013 plate A4 2.0 TDi 177 is due a service ( just coming up 40k miles ) I've been told by my local Audi dealer this is a 'major' service comprising of oil & inspection (?) plus fuel & pollen filter replacement for which they want £ 498 inc vat.
Now those items don't sound like a major service to me so I was wondering what else they would be doing in the 'inspection' to warrant that kind of price & should I just use my local & very trusted garage ?
The car has done a few miles with the first owner but we now cover probably 6k miles / annum.
My only concern is the stories of people having problems just outside of warranty where Audi sometimes help out if you have full Audi service.
I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Phil.

The "major" description relates to the level they're going to rip you off .

Shop around with the Audi dealers you'll be surprised at how they can vary, then get your local dealer to match the best price.

Mine is due the big one next £350 from Audi Bristol

I queried the price with my local dealer & apparently the £ 309 is for cars out of warranty, my car needs more checks cause it's in warranty, yeh right, £ 189.00 worth of 'extra' checks !
I've emailed another dealer for comparison but £ 498 seems ****** steep for what amounts to an oil & filter change plus a fuel filter
Lanner27, is your car less than 3 years old ?
Phil

Email your local VAG indy garage for a price, specify that it must include genuine VAG filters and correct spec oil. Show this to the Audi dealer and he will match it.
I buy my own oil to save even more money.
My 19000 mile service cost £148.25 for the Audi dealers parts and labour and £23.50 for 5 litres of fully synth Petronas VAG spec oil.

When it's out of warranty use the indy garage :)

I just had my major service. Audi Newcastle *only* wanted £350 for it but I got a quote from a local VAG specialist for £245 which Audi Newcastle matched.

Well I got a cheaper price from Audi York ( still £ 400 ) but local Audi dealer matched it ( amazing how they can knock £ 100 off just like that ) anyway I didn't have any more time to hunt around so it's been into Teesside. The did collect the car from my home & dropped it off after too which saved sorting a courtesy car or sitting around dealer for 3 hours. Could someone tell me though, should they have given me a printed sheet to keep in my service book &/or a ticky box sheet to say what has been done & checked ? They rang to say it needed new wipers ( declined ) & front tyres are down to 4mm but all I got was my invoice which I would keep with my credit card statement & doesn't mention need for new wipers or tyre tread depth. When I bought the car it had a printed sheet from an Audi dealer to keep in the back of the owners manual pack ( why don't Audi have a service book ? ) to say the service had been carried out, mileage etc

My A4 is also coming up to the 40k service and looking in the book the gearbox oil also needs replacing as its an auto. Perhaps this is also something they've included in the cost as from what I can gather thats approx another £150.

Good tip about the price matching. I wonder if they would match a independent as using one shouldn't affect warranty that I'm aware of??

Audi will match an indie if you can get a fully itemised quote.

We always get a printed sheet with all the work done and the checks. Newer Audis are all on the electronic service book so you don't get a hard copy unless you buy one. It should mean that a cars service history is available at any dealer.

I asked for a service book when I picked up my car, I make sure it gets stamped but also keep the paper invoice as proof of Audi service history.

This all makes good sense (for VAG) - while you are under warranty you need to pay bigger service bills plus electronic service record holding, that should shut out some of the indies - all essential when you (VAG) have some big bills to pay - they must have seen this emissions scandal coming! (well they should have been preparing for that eventuality since 2007)

Seriously "electronic record holding" is good and expected, but so is filling in the customer held service record book, why is it so difficult to do both things? I smell a rat!
