Started the car earlier this week to find that the power steering wouldn't work. As I had topped it up with fluid not too long ago due to it making a noise I assumed the pump had gone. The breakdown assistance guy turned up and pointed out to me that the aux belt was loose in the engine bay and the bottom crankshaft pulley had failed.

Took it to a garage and £450 it was replace and everything worked fine. I didn't manage to get any pictures of the offending pulley, however it had sheered completely creating an inner disc and outer ring (which should have been one single part).

I didn't get any warning that this was going to happen, no odd noised, judders etc, would have been very dangerous if it happened at speed and the power steering suddenly gave out.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Is it a known common fault? The garage said it was very rare on the 2.0tdi but they had seen it before on the 3.0tdi and on BMWs (German Auto Specialist).
