I sadly only got one key when I picked up my car last week, didn't get the plastic key either for getting a replacement. I obviously need a second key even if it is to only open the car. Searched the forum and found many comments and mixed advice but wanted confirmation on a few things first:

Can I just buy a second hand one and get a new blank key cut to replace it?

Not sure which one I have but are there 2 types of transponder? 433/866 mhz or something? How can I tell which one I have.

Presumably I can't re-programme a second hand one to match my car, am I better just going all out and getting a new key? Is the code/plastic key essential for this?

Ta.

Open your key where the key locks into and look there it will tell you part no and freq mate.
Contact a locksmith as there is a guy near me in nothern. Ireland that will cut, code a new key for £120. The dealer charges £220 for this...

I can replace these keys for 140 for a new key, or reprogram a second hand one from 35. I can also cut a replacement blade from just a photo of your existing key.
Part number is on the side of the key under the flip blade.

Cheers for that.

Ruairi, could you pm me that locksmiths details? I'm near Belfast.

when I needed one I had to go for the dealer.all the search haven't turned up anything usefull, even spoke to few key replacment companys/specialist was told these keys are hard to come by. that was a year ago it cost me £158 for a new key & programing to the carfrom audi Shrewsburry.

Well I'd be pretty sure that the Audi dealer here in NI would probably charge even more than that lol. Might actually phone tomorrow to check any way.....and get a laugh at their price ;-p

If you have code for key it simple to
Code a new key with vcds. Not just dealer can do it . They like to make you think that... Pm'd details of locksmith.

if you have a B6 you can code a new key yourself with VCDS if you have the pin code. It's totally different though with the B7. Immo transponder chips for newer VAG such as B7 A4, 8P A3 etc use a different system where the transponder needs to be precoded with data specific to each individual car before it can be coded to the car with the pin code. VCDS doesn't do precoding so even if you have a new virgin key & the pin code there's nothing you can do with it to get it programmed to the immo with VCDS unless you have equipment that will precode

no worries. I've seen too many people with newer models such as the B7 that use the precode system trying to code new keys just with VCDS & after several failed attempts have ended up causing all sorts of fault codes which has ended up in their original key not working neither so the car won't run
