potentially dangerous to your wallet and/or engine yeah.

Might be a simple case of replacing the plastic tensioning guide on the cam chain tensioner or may need a complete new cam chain tensioner (which is expensive). Or it may be that you haven't kept on top of your oil servicing and its having adverse affects on things that rely on oil pressure - such as your cam chain tensioner.

I had that exact same noise and it ended up being a new cam chain tensioner for me
