My years of experience of buying and owning cars has let me down, on Friday I brought an B5 A4 2000 reg 1.8T sport on 128k miles

ive just had my car checked over because of a ticking noise which turns out to probably be the cam chain tensioner going, doenst make a sound till the engines warm then rattles and taps away happily after and sounds like a diesel. Ive been quoted £800 quid to have this fixed. does anyone have any ideas on how i can get this price down?

i paid 1100 for the car and im just wondering if id be better of sticking it back up for sale and getting shot or get it done and hope ive got some decent motoring ahead.

the other problem ive got is a strange noise coming from the breaks, they are fine but wen im on a hill and i let it roll backwards a bit it makes a noise as if the the pads are slightly pressing the discs, warped??

EXCELLENT.

pads could need a shim
is it a clunk noise ?

the parts for the chain aint cheap
im sure for new chain and parts needed its around 400 thats what they were for my b7

What is your engine code(should be 3 letters), there are 2 tensioners one around £150 and the other around £400.

The engine is an AWT that i can see stamped on the head.
the breaks isnt a clunking noise, cant realy explain it, sounds like a groaning noise if that make sense.

annoying that i didnt take it on a longer drive to let the engine heat up, i feel stupid lol.

Everyone makes mistakes, you can't test for everything unfortunately. Problem with selling it on is you won't get your money back unless you are planning on stitching someone up by not telling them which would be immoral.

I would take it to a trusted independent Audi specialist and ask how much they want to give it the once over and see what might need doing to it on the promise that they will get the work. Just make sure they come recommended as being honest and reasonable.

AWT is VVT, so the dear one. However, it's as likely that the pickup in the sump is clogged too causing low oil pressure. I'd be getting that done first

Could that cause the tapping?

I also completely forgot to mention a vital bit of info, I was driving back up the M1 heading home on sunday, as i came off i got to a dual carriage way which has steep hills, for around 10 minutes of driving everytime i went uphill the oil light came on, at the gtime i thought it was oil level but i later that night learnt it was oil pressure light, it came on uphill and then went off again when it levelled out it went off again, hasnt done it since and ive given it an oil change from 5w30 to 5w40.

I'd jet the oil pick up changed and stick some fresh oil in. apparently the VVT is the first thing that is effected by oil pressure issues so could explain the ticking.

Ahhhhh. Oil pressure light. Get it done. Don't drive it'll kill the turbo followed by the head then the bottom end. Also will cost you a quarter of the quote for the tensioner

Gave the engine a good flush today and some more fresh oil, the oil that came out with the flush, to be fair was pertty damn clean, couldnt find much wrong with it, id say the flush has made a difference to the engine, its alot smoother and quieter but the cam tensioner is still ticking, car is booked in to have pressure checked and to get wnhat ever the issue is sorted out. will report back next week

So garage confirmed yesterday its cam chain tensioner, dont fancy paying £800 quid so brought the parts and going to have a crack at it my self. its actually got alot worse and allot louder, even felt a bit of a missfire when driving so things arent good, gonna get cover off and see whats up. post back how things went

Ive got the new tensioner seated and bolted, cam shaft back in correct position, now chain is loose, but when i tighten up the camshaft the chain goes really tight before ive even take the tensioner tool out, is this normal?

pretty much, it needs oil pressure to pump it to tension

Well, all done, started up straight away nice and quiet and running smooth :D please ive done it my self, brought all the bits for £250 quid and was quoted 800 quid by garages. Having a beer.

got a slight missfire at low revs when foot to floor, probably a spark plug issue as it was happening from a couple of days ago. also water temperature wont go above 70degrees, any ideas?

misfire could be many things, if spark related it should have a code for the cylinder, If no codes, i'd look for leaks causing it to run lean

The stat will be the issue for the not heating up issue.

another problem ive got is sludge, i need to get this looked because my breather hose running from intake pipe to back of rocker covers was blocked with sludge till i cleared it all out, how could previous owner treat it like that? unreal.

So, the saga continues, fix one problem, another pops up. went for a drive, 30 minutes in after engine is warmed up i get oil pressure light and noise from the cams, stoped and waited for Mr AA man to tow me home. When i had a garage check it recently they said pressure is great when cold but drops to 1bar when hot which sounds about right, starts up now and runs smooth but as soon as temperature is up it drops down, but this time to the point where no oil was getting up top.

FML.

Sludge and pick up change was mentioned early in this thread. It's not expensive for the pick up or the sealant. Just a bit labour intensive to get to

as above pick up pipe maybe oil pump aswell
you may be lucky and avoided any major damage

Alright, so having done further research, its possible the oil pressure issue can also be down to worn engine components, cams bearings etc, when i was changing the tensioner i noticed the intake cam had some really bad worn cam bearigs, the acutall cam itself on one section had a dip in it where its has grinded away over time, and the actual bearing cap had tiny bits of metal in, ive come to learn this can cause oil pressure issues, this would make sense since the engine is good when cold,

so any thoughts on where i go from here? im looking at a money pit here, should i cut my losses and sell it on ebay listing the issues? i could replace cams and bearings my self, IF the parts arent to expensive and this might solve the problem, but ive still got to ge the sumnp off and check the pump etc

Maybe you should change your thread title to "bought a duff car", you might get more help that way nut anyways what car is it?sound is common problem do not worry so much...

Are you for real? you came here just to have a pop at my spelling? then proceed to spell "nut" instead of "but" "anyways" instead of "anyway"

You then follow that up by asking what car it is with out actually reading anything on this thread, you will see on the first line of the thread it clearly states "B5 A4 2000 reg 1.8T".

The problems have all either been solved / not worth fixing or repaired.

HOLY SHAT, you are one stupid moron with nothing better to do than offer crap advice and be a hypocrite.
