What's the deal with cracked heads on 140PD engines now?

A friend of mine has a 55-plate 2.0TDI 140PD which seems to be suffering from the cracked cylinder head problem that's been well documented.

What's the deal with this issue these days? Does he have any recourse against Audi for this problem as it's a known issue? As it stands, he's bought a used car which has an expensive problem which is well known to Audi. I'm not sure if Audi would offer to fix the problem out of warranty or offer any compensation towards the repair bills?

I can't believe they haven't been pulled up by the vehicle standards people on this as it's such a known fault, and forced to do a recall or fix affected cars for free like they were with the injector issue on the 170PD.
