My '99 gear knob has lost its cap and is ugly anyway, and a mate's facelifted A3 has a S3 shifter so I was looking at transplanting his original into mine. At first blush, it appears the actual attachment system and reverse-pushdown system is different, but it was dark and I was pretty tired. Is this going to end up being some hellaciously involved process or is there a simple way to install it? I know the gaiter frame is different and that's fine, happy to do whatever is required for that.

Yep, it is.
You need to replace the entire shift tower and the cables. The exhaust needs to come off to do this.
A worthwhile mod for sure, buy a facelift A3 shift tower and give it a go.

Bleeding hell, that's a lot of work and cash I imagine. Perhaps I can find something kinda nice looking and feeling that is a more direct replacementâ¦
