Driving Roads In Scotland, Wales and England... Fancing a few long weekends. Ideas??

Well as above realy,
I keep thinking of the call of "the ring " as a road trip. But due to recent events and storys i think long before i even think of that i should enjoy whats on the door step so to speak,
Obviously ive looked at websites... But theres nothing like a personal recomendation , Im thinking of either a day out or basing ourselfs at a hotel or guest house,
Where would people suggest?
