Ive been having a intermittant problem when starting my car (1.8 tsq) every so often when I try to start the engine it sort of initally fires once then doent start, then I try to start up again and it just turns over and just keeps turning over untill it slowly starts to fire (as though its been flooded) then it catches whilst clearing itself then runs fine...its been doing this for at least 12 months but it seems to happen a little often of recent....Does anyone else have this problem?

Maybe a fault with the coolant temp sensor?

Mine sometimes does something a little similar. You turn the key and it catches, but instead of it immediately jumping up to 800rpm, it sort of farts around at like 400, then slowly makes its way up to normal idle speed. Usually a slight blip on the throttle will sort it out when it does it.

Very occasionally it will stall, but will usually restart with a bit of throttle without issue.

Other possibilities might be worn spark plugs?

Have you scanned the ECU with Vagcom to check for any faults?

Hello again,

I think m problems is slightly different as mine just catches then doesnt start untill you keep turning it over for about 30seconds, then starts buts needs revving to clear itself. But I'll take a look at that sensor...where is it mounted?
Last had a vag check at unit 20 which is an RS specialists and that was the first time it had been checked since ive owned the car (10 years) NO faults were found which i thought was very weird as my RS B5 used to through up faults like a womans time of the month.lol
Cheers
Paul
