Hello,

Have owned my 1.8t '59 for 8 months now, it's done 95,000.
Have also had to top up oil since start every 400-500 miles or so, but it's gotten dramatically worse and now the last 1 litre only lasted under 250 miles! Also in the 10,000 miles I've done I've had the coolant light come on twice. There is some white smoke at points, but not continuous (mainly when it's cold and put my foot down) which suggests a head-gasket issue? However can't see any 'mayo'. Any suggestions as to next steps? What am I looking at cost-wise to have it inspected and is it a common fault? Also forgot to add- no oil is spilling out anywhere that I can see, haven't seen any on drive.

Many thanks in advance,
Evelyn

I think it may be an issue with your fuel tandem pump-I had this problem with my tdi and its currently getting addressed.

Oil will be mixing in with your fuel so u don't actaully see any oil leaks-I also had similar issues with my coolant light coming on and Audi did replace my coolant bottle-in retrospect it may not have been required and the coolant light was just indicating an issue with the tandem pump!

Ok worth a look, thanks for the suggestion. What would be the cost of replacing the tandem pump?

Audi quoted me 800£ for parts and labour:( but Im still in discussion with them as I have had noticed this problem while under warranty and Audi ignored it and now they recommend replacing it out of warranty.
I wonder why did that....

New 1.8 and 2.0 tfsi have piston issues there is a revised part but that includs 4 new Pistons fitted

Audi know about this

Can the piston issues be tested by a specialist garage? Not too keen on taking it to audi due to the cost per hour of work there!

evelyn13,
please listen to this guy as he known what he is saying.
this is a known problem within the VAG group but VAG are ignoring it.
gaps on the piston rings a thin due to a bad design fault.
it will eventually lead to timing chain snapping thereby causing total engine failure.

is your engine code CDAA?
its also known more on the 2.0 tfsi as well.

I'm currently doing an oil consumption test. results to follow soon !!!!!

very worrying. Extended warranty might cover it ?

extended warrantee depends on who you take it out with.
try to read the small print but Audi extended warrantee should cover you.

I'm having the car looked at on Monday by a specialist in Nottingham. I will say about the piston rings though. Not sure what engine I have sorry, is there any way for me to check online?

It will be the piston issue

There is modified piston

I work at a VAG specialist in staffs

We have done loads of these £2000⏫⏫⏫⏫

The protocol from audi is to replace the breather unit on top of cam cover and crank seal, then carry out software update, this changes pressure, this has never worked £300ish

Then engine out and swap the Pistons

£2k to fix the piston isssue?!?!?!!?
Is there any way Audi will cover this?!
I'd have to sell the car if that is how much it would cost :)

Just to update: biscuit was right, it's a piston issue.
Potentially looking at a brand new engine.... Not happy!

Keep us all in the loop. Important we all stick together!!!

Look at my oil loss thread, there's a chap om it called mike who seems to know what the story is re goodwill etc.

Can you all tell me : do you have a pressed dipstick or a cable dipstick?

My dipstick seems horribly inaccurate. The oil reading that is left by a dip is at 45 degrees across the gauge......

I Dont knowcoz I haven't seen my car for over three months.
When I get the car back I will let you know.

Hi guys,

Check my thread on the A4 B8 forum regarding TFSI oil consumption.

Just had my car back recently. Fix was done free of charge and was out of warranty. Total cost £5500!

See the link below for a recent discussion on Radio 4's You & Yours programme regarding the 2.0 TFSI. Fast forward to just before 10 minutes in.

Interesting that the new Piston Rings are a different geometry to the old ones therefore an adjustment was made to the new Pistons!

Looks like Audi have a lot to hide here in the UK and the relaxed attitude of the British consumer will allow Audi to get away with this. I had to pay £2840 towards the cost of a new engine following a total engine failure.
This needs to be made public.

Thanks for that link Mike.

I'd be interested to see the sales figures on the 2.0 unit vs the 1.8 unit - Purely because there seems to be much more coverage of the 2.0Tfsi issues.

The 1.8tfsi on the 8P chassis was not very popular choice as buyers went for the 2.0 tfsi but on the 8V chassis the 1.8 tfsi replaced 2.0 tfsi. So the 1.8 tfsi will be the next choice before the s3.
