The ECU is in the bulkhead in front of the wiper motor on th edrivers side, in black water tight box. The lid is secured by 8mm head bolts make sure you remove them all.

When the belt is being replaced as the garage to make sure the alternater freewheel pulley is working correctly, as this can cause the V belt to fail.

Your front axle weight should be on the vin plate/sticker. A small black sticker located around the drivers side bulkhead/strut top.

As suggested above, read the fault codes. This will suggest if you have a door switch, interior sensor etc faulty.

You don’t need to change the little damper you refer to. That is to tension the belt, you just need to compress this and use a pin to hold it in place while you fit the belts. It is often easier to remove it from the engine and compress it in a vice.

The 8l0959643b is for vin number up to f 8lx200000 06/99 The 8l0959643c is for vin number f 8ly000001 onwards 07/99 Dealer cost is £87.60 plus vat. I doubt they are interchangeable. Hope this helps.
