This sounds familiar. I think I had this and it was the brake light switch needed replacing. Check if your brake lights are working, that'd be another tell-tale sign. I'm not 100% certain but if it is the brake light switch then it's an easy fix. There's a guide on here somewhere.

Since the sensors are originally black do they need to be painted for a black car, i.e. are they a different black? Have a black A4 and very interested in adding parking sensors but never sprayed anything before so that would put me off doing it.

How exactly do you take the front lid off? I've had a look underneath and there looks like a couple of pins holding the hinges in place. Do these just pull out? I have the same problem and i don't want to break it further!
