Yep - that would be the story of the scumbag who broke into my house whilst the family and I were asleep upstairs and found my keys, stole one of our cars and ruined our lives for several months. Makes you fecking mad that they get off with almost no punishment at all. My MP is currently trying to have this case looked at again...
My advice, as a victim of a 'millenium crime' is this:
Lock all your doors and windows - from the inside
Fit a burglar alarm
If your car is of value (you decide, but the combined value of my S3 & Cayman S is £70k) then fit a tracker - ensure it is the type of device that even if they get the keys - the car tracker activates automatically)
Fit security lighting
DO NOT keep any spare keys in the house
If you go out and don't use the car, take the keys with you
LOCK the keys away in a safe place (preferably upstairs in a safe) once you are home or keep them close to you at night (upstairs) DO NOT leave them where someone can find them easily - OK so someone is now going to say that's silly as they'll just kick the crap out of you when they can't find the keys? That's aggravated burglary - highly inlikely they'd do that - they'll just take what they can and leg it, but IF they REALY WANT your keys - give them over - life's too short ...
Keep your mobile phone next to when you sleep
HAVE A PLAN - if someone gets into your home - have a plan on what you'll do
It won't happen to me? It COULD. I live in a sleepy little village where people think crime is something that happens to other people. The scum who stole my car lived well outside my area - but they travel to places such as where I live as they know - we're easy targets (being so laid back and trusting) and we have nice cars...
I can assure you, never again am I going to be the victim of this kind of crime. If I'd read (and followed) the advice I have just given you guys it would had never have happened.
