Hey everyone,

My missus has just picked up a 1.6 A3 (2000 plate) which needs some work doing to it.

I was looking around it today, and found a random button on the drivers side back door ledge (if that makes sense). It's a picture of a car, with 3 ultrasound sort of waves coming down towards the bottom of the car.

Car has no alarm from what I can see... Any ideas?

yes mate its for the alarm.when you leave some one in the car and want to lock it,so the alarm dont go off.:icon_thumright:

Thats the toxic gas selector for if the cars broken into...

Not really!

Its for the alarm system, you probably do have one fitted on the car (Their quiet as tho so you wouldnt know!)

Its for when you leave a dog in the car or windows down, mine just goes off whatever setting its on

Ohh thanks, that makes sense. I've locked myself into the car using the remote, then had a little dance inside. The indicators started going crazy (Alarm?), but alas, no sound.

Very scary alarm I must say, I'm sure all these bright lights will scare off the thieves!

Maybe the siren is broken?

It should beep like an alarm clock! Sounds like your Siren is ********, only £80 or so for a replacement and a couple of hours to fit yourself.

Hi Simon,

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm sure you'd want to know this also...

Does anyone know of any upgrades for the siren? As I'm sure you will agree, the standard one is a bit of a joke, unless it works on some inaudible level that I don't know about. Would the best route to take is to get an after market alarm for the price of three standard sirens or so?

My mate 'shineydave' on rs246 relocated his alarm siren to the bonnet in his s4!! obviously it echos more and sounds alot louder!! My siren was buggerd on my old s3, i replaced it (£80ish from audi and fairly straight forward to install.... (under the left hand cubby hole / sub)) or you can open the siren and replace the batteries which ive never tried but suppose would save some pennies!!

Hope this helps! SJ

ok help here for me aswell seems as were on the alarm subject, where is the siren located ive searched the car for it!, mine just flashes too ;-)

cheers

Can you just fit a aftermarket alarm to the old siren ??

The siren's batteries go & audi have actually updated the siren to a newer one for the 8L, I had 2 go, then got new one & it was the new flatter version, time consuming & a pain in **** to fit sometimes, but batteries cant be replaced as usually the batteries leak over the PCB & destroy the tracks so cant be repaired, trust me I tried & tested with a meter, the batteries are not available as replacement & I searched hi/lo for them online, buy the newer version which is far more reliable.

Note though, check with vag to make sure your siren hasnt been turned of for the alarm as its an option you can turn on/off, mostly its a knackered siren batteries but some have been known to be switched of in vag.

Aftermarket siren I doubt as it has diagnostics wire to the siren to, you would always get the error in vag, if you wanna ignore the error then fine, but I suspect the diag wire also signals it to work to a degree, so I would just use the OEM one.

Its located at the rear, passenger side hidden behind the side panel where the subwoofer is right at the back in the corner, sunk down into the panel & you can see the retaining nut from inside the boot looking in & you have to then take nut of then lift the siren out of the corner which is fixed to a kinda bronze looking bracket, I'm sure there's some pics on AS somewhere to show you as I dont have my S3 anymore to show sorry.

That's fine, I'm coming from the BMW world myself, and I'm already waist deep into DIY'ing. What's the part number for it? And is there an online part list for Audi? (Like www.realoem.com for BMW)

I've got no idea where you mean! By the CD changer? Wouldn't under the bonnet make more sense :uhm:

Thanks, I think I'm just going to replace the siren. I'd be interested to see about an aftermarket one though ...

I've recently learned that the siren has rechargeable batteries that wear out over time. If your siren has stopped working, it could be that your batteries are knackered. If you want to sort it (the cheap way) see this very useful thread....http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?p=375608#post375608

The siren can be made a little louder if you reposition somewhere other than the wheelarch!!

I've seen that, but it said it was for the TT... Able to do that on the A3 aswell? Sirens not been working for quite a while apparently, hopefully the battery hasn't leaked everywhere.
