My car is a 2003 S3, older shape.

I hear something running when my car is turned off and even the key taken out. It is heard more profoundly by the back tyre. its a small wizzing/wooing sound. The problem is it is draining the battery overnight. so i presume it does not cut off. what could that be? it dosent sound ike the fuel pump cause when the key is inserted the fuel pump sounds much heavier and it seems to cut out that sound. however once turned off the sound continues. what could that be. its clearly a malfunction but of what??

Any ideas? is there a mechanisim that i am not aware of that is supposed to keep running after the car turned off? and no i have never seen the fan fun after the car is shut off. (dont know if it should like the WRX subaru), anyhow like i said the sound is more profound by the back tyres.

Please let me know what you think.

could be, as i know nothing abut these things. explain a bit more, what is the central locking pumpand what does it do? would i hear it in the wheels? or mre so under the car listening at the wheels? let me know. because the central locking system doesnt work actually so u could be right!!

let me know what u think.

The pump is in the boot beside the left rear light and sub, open that bit up and see if it's whining

I think the pump is in the boot area (driver's side I think), the locks on the car are hydraulically operated. Could be a bust pump or a broken hyd line. Get it on VAG-com, it'll bring up a fault

Nope, it's on the passenger side(left side) underneath the subwoofer. Quite difficult to get to actually, need to remove the interior trim and subwoofer etc.

i dont hear it from the boot but i also realise that it is only heard in the back tyres
the both back tyres left and right but not at the front tyres. and faintly when listening by the engine. could it be sme issue with the back brakes? or that system that is used to decide when the four wheel drive kicks in? i will still hve the mec look into the hydriolic central lock system though

oh hi jojo, i just listened through the drivers side.....my have to check the other side now as well in the boot. bear in mind the car in question is the older version/shape. does your comment still hold true?

yeah it's where myself and jojo have described, definately.

Although if it's loud enough to be heard from both back wheels i would expect it to be fairly loud in the boot too.

Still, its worth checking if even just to cross it off the list

will do. but do you think that it could be anything else? break related? it almost sounds likethe sound is coming from the brakes attaced to the diskpad or somewere off there. what do u think?

It definately sounds like the central locking pump to me. If you take the left hand panel off in the boot you will be able to see the subwoofer and down low infront of it you will see a foam box, the pump is inside this.

It would probably help to run a vagcom diagnosis on the car, if you have vagcom mate.

hrd to come by those as i am in jamaica. but nevertheless i will try t get one. my mechanic shuld have one but he is f for the holidays. :(

They actually come from Rosstech in the USA so shouldnt be too hard to import for you mate, it will be well worth the outlay over your ownership mate

Steve,

is that your car? its pristine

Yes thats my car in the pic below its only got 36k miles on the clock and i spend a fare bit of time detailing it so its in pretty good nick.

Have you got any pics of yours mate, must be farely exclusive in Jamaica mate?

you are right. i am gonna take some pics. but only about 3 of them are out here. there are many other types of audis but not many S3s. my pics wont be anything like yours though, second hand and the old owner well lets say it has alot of work to be done. windows, central locking, new clutch. stuff like that. most of those are already shipped though.

Look forward to seeing the pics mate, then as you get the car to how you want it it will be good to see some more to compare the undoubted improvement.

thts the plan man!!!!

as you would prb say cheers. shuld get the pics t you tomrrow or well in ten hours. (time barrier )

hey mn when u have time tellme what is a remap? r what part is remapped?

A remap simply means rewriting the ecu code to change how it regulates the air/fuel mixture usually freeing up around 25bhp on an S3.

They can also prove economy when the car is being driven sedately, not that you'll do that much once you have a remap lol

:) got you.

Happy holidays people!!!

Tell me bout the turbo cooling system? is there a turbo cooling system? 2003 S3 (older model) thats runs after the car is turned off?

Yep there is a pump that circulates the engine coolant for a short while after the engine has been turned off.
You'll hear a slight whirr from the engine bay.
