I am posting this to hopefully share the information that I have regarding the ambient lighting delete that a lot of members and our customers have experienced, I have seen that there are many thread about this however I am going to try and summarise this in this post as clearly as I can. The following information is based on the 8Y's we have worked on and there may be some exceptions so please feel free to correct me if I am incorrect and I will update this thread accordingly.

The A3 8Y was released from 2020 although most were 2021 by the time they were registered on the UK roads.

There was many options available on the 8Y as with any other Audi and those options also included 2 levels of ambient lighting packages:

QQ1 - Front footwell white lighting, rear footwell white lighting, centre console cubby hole white lighting, interior door handle white LED lighting and door puddle lights.
QQ2 - Front footwell white lighting, rear footwell white lighting, centre console cubby hole white lighting, interior door handle white LED lighting, door strip (silver trim) ambient multicolour lighting, door card panel multi colour lighting, dashboard multi colour lighting and door puddle lights.
QQ5 - None of the above.

Due to covid, chipset shortages, the war etc the optional interior lighting package was available to tick when customers spec'd their A3's but when they were delivered there was no lighting package fitted and all there was was a box of Audi puddle lights in the glovebox. Many people questioned this with Audi UK and some dealers didn't know that this was the case.

There was also another twist to the above, early 8Y's had door control modules fitted to the front and rear doors, this allows puddle lighting to be retrofitted, later 8Y's had no rear door modules and even the most recent 8Y's we have seen have no rear door modules fitted so it looks like its a cost cutting exercise and will be a permanent deletion - this means that puddle lights cannot be fitted to the rear doors.

Another point I’d like to share is that Audi have deleted the red warning lights on the end of the door card regardless of whether puddle lights are fitted as standard or not, these were a part of the door lighting package on previous A3’s. This a common retrofit for owners as it relatively straight forward to carry out.

The good news is that all the above can be retrofitted varying in price from simply fitting puddle lighting for £40 to a 4 figure price for the QQ2 package. Sadly to retrofit rear door modules is not simple and is expensive to do so - many people simply live without the option of having puddle lights fitted to the rear doors to an OEM level, there will be people who will splice into various wiring in the door latch to make them work to a certain degree but its certainly something that we would not recommend. We have also mixed and matched with door strips from the QQ2 package and fitted them with white QQ1 lighting to bring the costs down - there are many different options available to suit all budgets.

Hopefully this information gives owners a good insight into the 8Y ambient lighting package or the lack of! I have been a long serving member on here and have helped many 8P and 8V owners out and I hope that the above information is of use and help to 8Y owners - please feel free to correct me on anything as this is an information share post so happy to be corrected on anything of the above from owners who have 8Y's.

But they should all now come with front puddle lights though should they? I suppose I can’t complain if I don’t get rears as it doesn’t say it comes with rears anyway?

And £44k for an S3 and they are cost cutting with no rear puddle lights? What a joke lol
Just noticed it says on the spec entry lights on underside of rear doors, is that not confirming rear puddle lights then?

We have customers with £60k A4's and A5's come in for glovebox lighting kit retrofit...........

Yes so underside entry lights does mean puddle lights but even though some 8Y customer have had this on their spec sheet their A3's arrived without them.

So hopefully if it’s listed them on a spec I have some sort of come back with the dealer? Money off etc?

Nope - our customers have said that they tried to get the dealer to do something about it but they basically got nothing, best case was a customer who managed to get the dealer to give them a set of puddle lights.

Also I’m guessing the cars you are seeing were made when there were shortages etc and certain batches, hopefully the new black Ed s3 come with it all. Have to see

The last 2 8Y’s we had in was a 2023 S3 and a 2023 45 and both didn’t have rear door modules fitted or any interior lighting - both cars had less than 100 miles on the clock so our customers drove from the dealership to us.

As the black Editon specifically states ext amb lighting and Audi beam , if I get the amb lighting and at least front puddles I’ll be happy lol.

I would imagine the Black Editions will have them as not a lot of point introducing the MY23.5 if they still can't deliver - The ones that have come in recently without them still will be the MY23 models

Yeah that’s what I thought so hopefully I get rears too if they are saying it on the spec list

Today we had a 2023 S3 8Y come in and this had QQ1 fitted from factory - front puddle lights, footwell lights and centre console cubby hole lighting - no rear puddle lights though.

I believe you can add the extended ambient lighting to the S3 only. Would this add the puddle lights to the rear doors ?? Is the wiring there to retro fit I wonder ??

We suspect that there will be no door control module fitted to any of the later 8Y’s which would mean no puddle light can be fitted but we will find out when we get one come to us so we can check.

Wiring will not be there, unless it’s being used then Audi will never put additional wiring in.

Still waiting to see the first s3 black editon, even on Audis website for brand new ones there doesn’t appear to be any for sale as stock yet to see one in flesh and not cgi

I have ordered a black edition saloon and I understand it will only come with the basic QQ1 which has puddle lights on the front only. I am currently in a 22 A3 Saloon which I had the option to add the extended lighting pack which therefore included puddle lights on the rear doors. Such a shame Audi no longer lets you add the extended pack as an option.

Hi Dave, sorry only just seen this question, you require piggyback kits which from memory I believe you have ordered from us already?

Just to follow up on this, this week we have successfully completed the genuine Multi Colour Ambient Lighting to 2021 Audi A3 8Y S-Line. This is the OEM setup as if fitted at the factory using Genuine Audi OEM parts and wiring only. Nothing aftermarket etc.

This took us a number of months to work out if it was even possible along with the client coming to us a couple of times to carry out some feasibility tests which proved succesful. Based on that we forged ahead with the complete retrofit which we completed today in fact.

Customer is collecting tomorrow. Cost is around £1800-2000 inc VAT supplied and fitted with all brand new Audi OEM parts with 2-Year Warranty.

We will be putting videos and photos up of the retrofit on our Website/YouTube channel etc shortly and on AS.net.

Cheers

Andy.

Collected my new 2023 Black Edition S3 at the weekend, It comes with puddle lights in the front doors and rear door entry lights as standard. I upgraded the front puddles to the gecko/Audi rings and the dealer then put the the standard puddles from the front into the rear doors. The car also came as standard with an ambient lighting pack and other lighting themes are available via the my Audi App Store, (for a fee).

Do you mean dealer let you swap the Audi beam light for the gecko one? Or you’ve put the Audi rings in the rear? Does anyone know the best seller on eBay for puddle lights? I want the S3 ones for the rear but I hear some are not very good or bright?

You can only get S3 logo version puddle lights in aftermarket form.

So what was in the rears then if you moved the fronts to the rears? Wouldn’t the rears already come with just a plain led light in?

I collect my BE S3 on Wednesday, I have already seen the car and can confirm puddle lights in both front and rear doors as came from the factory. Nothing has been fitetd by the dealer, it also does not need the fusebox recall, i cannot comment on Ambient lighting until I get the car.

We along with Audi Upgrades have completed 2 x full ambient lighting retrofits to OEM level, one in Cheshire premises and one in Sussex premises - more details to follow.

to anyone considering this retro fit all I can say is its worth it - transforms the cabin of the car and night time driving. I am biased as have had Rocket Wires do puddle lights and red door lights too but for those not skilled or brave enough to undertake these retrofits themselves I can't recommend Robin and Audi Upgrades highly enough very flexible and boy do they know their stuff. Retrofitting is midly addictive and you get a sense that you are customising your car to exactly how you would have liked to have ordered it from new but could never justify at the time!

Really glad you are happy with the outcome @andmaxyduncy - Both @RobinA3 and I are extremely pleased also. Here at @Audi Upgrades Ltd we have since done this genuine OEM ambient lighting install on another 2021 A3 8Y and will soon be posting a video on our YouTube Channel and here about it all.

Thanks again!

A couple months on from our last post and we along with Audiupgrades have now completed 14 full multicolour ambient lighting retrofits to 100% factory specification using our own bespoke custom wiring harnesses which mimic all the OEM wiring routing, OEM connectors and terminals plus genuine Audi trim pieces.

We have a couple more booked in next month and it's become a popular retrofit for 8Y owners who got delivered an A3 which was ticked with the option but was built without it. We have had a number of 8Y's come with delivery mileage plus the miles to get from the dealership to us for the retrofit.

Its a retrofit that we have worked extremely hard to refine to ensure its as close to factory fitted as possible, to the untrained eye it would not be possible to know that additional wiring has been added to the vehicle and its something we are very proud about. If anyone is interested in this retrofit then please get in touch.
