Audi Sport number plate surround

I went out to see about drilling/screwing my private plates on, I didn't fancy the sticky again as I had a right job getting them off the S3, ending up bending the plates and scratching the car! I took the plates out and the screws/caps will be well away from the numbers/letters on the front plate, but on the back plate the left screw/cap would have been right on the 2nd number :( So I called Audi up, he can get me a surround for tomorrow £13 so I'll give it a go :)
Used a surround on the back..but stuck the front one on

lol also been thinking about doing that rather than drilling the front plate! Harder to scratch the plastic it sits on when pulling them off! :)

I have read a few people had problems using a surround on the front, as it was interfering with the parking sensors.

Look ok to me. I never do private plates. Seem a bit BMW or caravaners to me but each to their own. I don't do Tories, tattoos or Brexit either. My new RS will proudly display EU PLATES.

I ended up getting mine for £10.90 each. Walked in and asked for discount and they gave me that price haha.

These look good, I'm going to get a set. Incidentally, here's a tip for removing sticky pads from the paintwork; the solvent Xylene works very well. It stinks and should be used outside but it will soften the sticky pads so any residue can be wiped off leaving a completely clean surface. It should be used with great caution on certain plastic as it dissolves some of them. It does not appear to harm the black plastic holder on the front. I've used Xylene for years having been very frustrated getting sticky pads off.

lol I did think about it :p normally I'm at the front of the line asking for discount :D But asking for discount on a £13 item was a bit hmmm even for me...if I'd bought 2 then maybe ;) :D

Anyone not bothered about waiting a few days the code for a genuine one from ebay is 3291401400 https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_....H0.X3291401400.TRS0&_nkw=3291401400&_sacat=0

I only bought one for the rear, they even fitted it on the car for me, and put my number plate in it too lol.

lol lazy as well :p

I need to find a couple of washers before I fit mine, you'd have thought they would have supplied two?!?

All done, tried it on the front but wasn't keen

Done

Can just see the top of the plate maker at the bottom, but nothing I can do about that, think it's the law to have that anyway?!?

It is only a legal requirement to have the postcode of the platemaker displayed.

Very nice. I hope to fit mine at the weekend but I also need new plates as mine are screwed on.

When I needed plates for the S3 (after I took the private ones off) I used these guys on eBay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/In-Car-Pro...1QQ_sidZ1058157705QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

Only £11.99 for a pair and tbh they were better than I'd expected! They also have various options you can select such as fonts, 3D etc.

Their options:
  • Whether you require plain plate, GB Flag, UK Flag or England Flag
  • If you want a border, the thickness will be 2mm unless specified (black border only)
I have the Hills Ultratek plates, but if anything happened to those I'd use a plain set from that link above!

The ones from that link so you can see, plain as possible :)

Thanks for that tip. They look good to me so I've ordered. Saves me a trip to Halfords and they're cheaper too.

That's what my dealer told me when I recently collected my new Q5, so they don't fit the front plate with a surround anymore, but just stick the plate on, which looks fine to me.

Fitted the surrounds front and back today. No issues with parking sensors at the front (yet). The back I just used the built in screw holes and secured with metal number plate screws and matching cup washers. At the front I used screw holes in the Audi Sport holder nearest to the short ends and the in the middle of the long axis, also with screws and cup washers. Using the screw holes furthest apart helps the holder to follow the curve of the car. I pre-drilled a tap hole for the screw thread in the mount on the car. I'm pleased with the result but I also took the opportunity to clean my exhaust pipe tips and I'm less pleased with that because they are pitted! Anyway, I digress.

Did you remove the sponge from the back that was under the original plates or did you take it off?

I left that thin grey foam in place. I presumed it is there to reduce rattles but it does also collect water leading to annoying dirty drips.

Both what I was thinking, I don't want to take it off and then leave the next owner with rattles/scratches when I put the original plates back on.

Quick question, did you use any additional washers to hold the plate holder on? The instructions that come with it suggest attaching the holder with 20mm ring washers. Don't want to buy washers that I am not going to need! Many thanks

No mate, I just used the screws that were holding the existing plate. Never got instructions with mine, but I do remember thinking will these screws hold it in place ok.
It’s been fine.

Same as BarryG79, I fitted mine with the original screws and had no need for washers. Anyway, the OEM plates do come with washers: if you look at the picture, there are 4 detachable plastic washers in the middle of the holder.

For the rear I could only use 2 screws in the centre, as there are only 2 holes already drilled directly in the metal body of the car. For the front I could easily drill the plastic bumper to make new wholes closer to the edges. This means the front plate can be made completely flush with the slightly curved bumper, but unfortunately the rear plate is straight against the slightly curved boot lid (I have the cabriolet - not sure whether it is the same with the sportback or saloon). Anyway, it was the same before.

I like these holders and the look of the plates without apparent holes.

lol never even noticed them when I fitted mine, in the end I used a couple of metal washers as the area I used looked like they may pull through without the washers.
