Could I please have some help?.......
Making up an adapter lead to allow the 1 piece OEM Valeo headlamps to be fitted to my earlier car everything is clear what goes where, with the exception of the 3 wires that go to the electrical headlight adjustment motors.
On the pre-facelift motors the wire colours are

Brown/black (terminal 3/31)
Brown/white (terminal 2/G)
Yellow/Black (terminal 1/56b) (nearside) and Yellow/white (offside)

On the facelift motors the wire colours are

Brown
Blue
Black

Now,I've no idea in which order these 2 sets of wires need to be connected together, the Haynes is useless as it only has wiring diagrams up to 1998 ie doesn't cover the 1 piece Valeos......
Any info would be most gratefully received!

Thanks

Paul

I could do with knowing this too - I've got mine in and lighting up but the motors aren't connected yet.

I think brown will be earth (seems to be with the rest of the wiring) so that's a start! Otherwise I'm not much use I'm afraid!!

Today I went to a local VW dealer and very nicely asked them if they could help me out, as apparently the same headlight adjustment motor is fitted to the MK4 Golf........
To be really pedantic the motor I have (1J0941295F) is obsolete but the part that has superseded it (1JO941295B) is the Golf item........
Anyway, they came up trumps with part of the wiring diagram and they gave me this info;

Golf /Bora headlight motor

2/G Black
1/+ Blue
3/- Brown
This is how the terminal numbers appear on the VW wiring diagram.....

From this I deduce;
Old motor Brown/White (2/G) will mate with new motor Black
Old motor Brown/Blue (3/31) will mate with new motor Brown
Old motor Yellow/Black and Yellow/White(1/56b) will mate with new motor Blue

I'm 99% certain this is correct, but before I go soldering the wrong wires together (LOL) would really appreciate if anyone who has a facelifted A4 wiring diagram could confirm!

Thanks!

Well, finally got around to fitting the headlights on Sunday, to be honest am not sure if I'd do it again!!!!
Spent ages doing the first side, it's fine knowing the wing needs to be trimmed but quite different knowing exactly how much to remove at any one time!
It was therefore a very slow process of trial-fitting the light several times until the fit was correct....the 2nd side was a bit quicker but still spent an entire day doing the light swap.
The wiring up of the adjustment motors went without incident as per my previous post and (incredibly) everything worked perfectly first time!
The beam pattern seems so much sharper with the projectors, and it really has transformed the appearance of the car, so even though it was a lot of work am certainly glad I did it................

looking fresh, i always think the non projector headlights let the front of our b5's down, good work. i never got around to fitting the hl level motors to my 2 piece projectors. im not to concerned though as i never have anyone in the back and arent getting a caravan anytime soon. =)

WELL DONE LOOKS BANG UP TO DATE!!

:hubbahubba: :respekt:

One problem you may encounter, is when you switch to full beam, the dipped beam goes out.

This is due to the switch and harness being setup for a twin element H4 bulb.

This can be overcome with a small mod to the connector before the headlight indicator switch.

Thanks everybody, I too think the pre-facelift is really let down by the old-fashioned looking headlamps...........

Thanks, I did read about that on an earlier thread, and have noticed that; am waiting for PIAA H7's to arrive so figured it wouldn't be too noticeable (hopefully!) in terms of light output when switching from main to dipped etc.
Do you have any details of the mod as I wouldn't mind having a go if it wasn't too complex a job?

im wanting to fit projectors to mine, where can i buy the 1 or 2 piece projectors from?

I think the 2 piece projectors are not of OEM manufacture and so I would guess Ebay?
My Genuine Parts 1 piece Valeos came courtesy of Ebay as well, £70 for the pair, as good as new........think if you wanted to buy new then the usual sources ie German & Swedish, Euro Car Parts sell them, but be aware that not all of the 1 piece projectors they sell are necessarily OEM Valeos, best bet is to ask who they are made by before parting with any money!

I got mine from here, got the adjusters there too. Brand new Valeo units.

i got my 2 piece projectors from ebay, they are made by inpro and are good quality, and plug and play.

A quick bit of good news to all those who have fitted 1 piece OEM Valeo facelift headlights to their pre-facelift cars and find that their dipped bulbs go out when they select main beam........
I've just done the wiring mod now and its incredibly easy to do when you know how!
Having consulted the Haynes manual and having taken apart a spare indicator/lighting switch this afternoon it was apparent that whenever the stalk is switched from high to main beam and vice versa there is a mechanical make/break within the switch itself.......
The 2 terminals on the stalk switch in question are 56 and 56b; if you can bridge these contacts then it does away with the make/break within the switch and you have dipped as well as main beam at the same time......
The easiest way to do this is to remove the steering wheel (easy enough, just remember to take negative lead off battery and when the wheel is replaced turn ignition to ON before re-connecting battery or you'll throw up the airbag warning light!) and then to remove the steering column upper and lower covers for access to the multiplug that connects to the indicator/lighting switch.
With the multiplug accessible the connection can be pulled apart; the multiplug consists of 14 female connections and the indicator/lighting switch has 14 pins.....
The 2 terminals that need bridging are the 1st (56) and 3rd (56b) pin (counting from the bottom of the lighting switch looking at it sitting from the drivers seat in a RHD car) on the left-hand side.
In case these instructions aren't clear enough the terminals are labelled on the switch , its just you may need a mirror to see them when the switch is in situ!
Sadly I didn't take any pics but 2 minutes work with a piece of insulated wire saw the 2 pins bridged and the multiplug re-connected.
I hope this is of some use to others who were in the same boat as me!

Hi,
hopefully someone could help me on this one. I have an A4 1997 with old style headlights( two pieces). Now I also have quite a bit of corrostion on the front wings, on both of them around the wheel arches. I have been considering to replace both my wings and my headlights with some projector facelift ones, one piece.

From your experience, does the front wing on a facelift fit an old style with the orange round-square repeater on the side? Do I have to change the bumper as well in order to get the fog lights at the bottom to fit? I know the old ones have the foglights inside the headlights, whilst the facelift has them in the lower bumper I i get the plastic trim and the fog light projectors will they fit into my bumper?

Does the old style front wings + old style headlights could be replaced directly by new style wings + one piece headlights? Obviously with some small changes to the wiring, etc?
Also I have been looking on ebay at non OEM angel eyes one piece headlights. Are they decent to replace the OEM? They seem to be listed as 1995-2001 sometimes, so I assume they could fit both prefacelift and facelift b5s.
Many thanks

AFAIK you can't fit bumper fogs to a PFL bumper. The bumper grills don't fit the PFL bumper either. If you want bumper fogs you will need the facelift bumper too. Wings are a straight swap.

So yeah, if you changed the wings and headlights together, all you will need to do is swap the headlight connectors over.

Not sure about angel eyes... I would avoid them like the plague personally.

Right, so you think that I could only do it with having a facelift bumber in order to fit the under bumper low projector foglights.
I am not very keen on angel eyes myself and actually i hate them even more on the brake lights. BUt i have actually seen something like this in real life( maybe not identical) and they looked OK to me...AUDI A4 95-99 PROJECTOR & ANGEL EYE HEADLIGHTS E MARKED on eBay (end time 02-Oct-10 14:19:50 BST)
What other headlight options would I have?
Thanks for your help.

theres an easier way to do the headlight mod....get 2 x high power diodes from maplin etc, need to take 5A continuous (not a lot really)

These are 6A (72w at 12v) 6A Silicon Rectifiers : Diodes : Maplin

94p!!!

Solder them between the high and low beam wires going to the headlights - band (cathode) to the low beam wire, and when you go to high beam, the low beams come on as well, thru the diode, but on dip, it prevents the high beams from lighting.

cost £1.88, time about an hour, difficulty easy peasy!

You can do this wi your fog and brake lights, and have extra brake lights but still working fogs.....think about it, diode band to fog wire...

:)

Thanks mate, this is very smart way of doing it. When i get to it :) ...
So whoever reads this agrees that the pre facelift headlights + front wings + old style bumber ( without fog projectors) could be directly replaced by facelift headlights + front wings + keep the old style bumber and fit fog projectors later or so in the bumper?

I am confused now! I could really do with being sure that they will fit my car. Really not sure what to do now. Rub strip? Does that mean that it will not mate with the bumper or something?

The wing will bolt on, but the strip under the repeater will be wider and the lower bit at the bottom may well be different, you will also need the newer repeaters too

I have been looking in photos to see a difference on that bottom strip. Could't find one yet! My problem is that if i were to change the whole bumper with a facelift one +headlights, etc, even if i find a silver one(my car is silver), it seems to be a different colour code on the facelifts.

The rub strip up the side of the car is much wider on a facelift.

Not sure if you can fit a pre-facelift rubstrip to a facelift wing, or if the fixings are different.

Also, the facelift wing has two slots in it, which hold the lower trim piece. I've no idea if these slots are the same on pre-facelift cars. youd need to check

I know what you mean now. I have had a better look on two photos side by side. Yes it is much wider on a facelift. Now, is there a reason why i could not drill or whatever so that i can fit the old strip which i already have? I would think it should not be too difficult. I have looked at many of them on ebay, none of them shows the back... just the front of them :D
The bottom lower trim pieace does seem more or less the same.. Again as far as I can see..

I have a facelift wing in the garage. If i get some time later, i'll take a snap of it for you, and you can compare the fixings with your wing.

Sorry to bump up an old page but I thought this might be the best way to get an answer I was looking for...

I have fitted the facelift headlamps and the facelift interior and done the wiring at the headlamp end for the headlamp level control...

My question is,

What is the wiring positions from the old level control switch connector block relative to the new one?

I cannot seem to find a reference to it anywhere.

Thanks.

F3

From what I can see it is simply a case of extending the wires from the old to new position. The plug and wiring appears identical for the switch between pre and post face lift cars
