So, 2017 has caused me to fall in love with the Audi S4 B5 which I haven’t been able to stop looking at... It’s also caused a bit of a stir for me with the B6... which in my opinion, V8 sounds delicious but I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the styling.

My thoughts could be considered ludicrous? But opinions and advice would be appreciated with this potential project.

SOOO just a thought. Using the B5 S4, stripping it of its 2.7TT and dumping the V8 lump in. Intentions are to completely redo the bodywork if it needs it and make it an absolute shiner with reupholstered interior too.

Other options could be using the B6 S4 but swapping the front and rear end with that of a B5?

Thoughts and advice appreciated! And how hard was it to swap the engine? Recommended to swap or not?

Cheers all!

The best swap donor is a C5 A6 4.2. Slightly different engine to the B6 (timing belt rather than chain, which is a good thing!) and crucially all the C5 mounts work in the B5 platform, so it makes for an ideal donor.

I'm working on a conversion just now. Theres a few custom bits needed (flywheel, radiator and front engine mount most notably) but its largely a fairly "bolt in" job as conversions go, so long as you've got a C5 donor with all the mounting brackets etc.

This is a good reference guide:

As for wether its a good swap, thats largely debatable. The V8 makes about the same power as a remapped S4, but the S4 will produce a LOT more torque, which makes it very different to drive. For the cost of converting to a V8, you could alternatively fit some K04's to the stock S4 engine, and make well over 400hp with massive torque to go with.

Personally, i've had smaller turbocharged engines for a while, and i just want to experience a big naturally aspirated V8.

Cheers @aragorn for the info and link, I shall look into that. Didn’t consider the A6 engine. Had a scout on YouTube for some mods and swaps carried out. Seems worth it changing the engine.

Could someone shed some detailed light on what the actual differences body/chassis/interior wise between the B5 and B6?

Fully aware about the v6/v8 change, slight front bumper change/ rear end but are the quarter panels the same B5, B6 in both A4 and S4?

the B6 is a completely different car...

Body panels are all really rather different, as is the chassis and running gear. Front subframe is similar, but thats about it.

It would be much easier (and cheaper) to swap a C5 / D2 / D3 V8 engine into your B5, than trying to make a B6 S4 a B5.

If you pick up a D2 A8 v8 engine, you’ll still need to use a C5 A6 4.2 wiring harness. And if you go with a D3 V8, you’ll need to use an S6 harness and ECU.
