Hey guys bit of a weird one, the S3 had been sat for just over a week without being started.
Tonight I started it up and let it idle to clear off the ice/snow.
The needle indicated 90 degrees but cold air was still coming out of the blowers.
Eventually the needle went up to 120 and the red warning displayed.
I turned the car off, then went back to it about an hour later and it was fine.
Stayed at 90 and hot air came out of the vents, any ideas?
My guess is the thermostat was stuck closed.

G13 is glycerin based rather than glycol based... from what I understand it is backwardly compatible with G12 based antifreeze

ok thanks guys, is there anything i should check that may have been damaged from the car overheating?

Strange? Are you confident that the coolant had sufficient antifreeze in it? I've only experienced similar symptoms in very cold conditions with a antifreeze/coolant mix that was too weak and it started to solidify

Not 100% confident, as its the same coolant that was in the car when i bought it.
Never had it happen the last 2 winters, but it wasn't sat unused like it was this time.

its also been colder than the last two years hasn't it? and coolant only last a few years. it sounds like it may have been frozen and the idling didn't generate enough heat or pressure to circulate. then after the ambient temperature had defrosted the coolant it's been fine.

Will that have damaged anything? Obviously with water expanding when freezing it cant be good.
System has been drained and refilled and cars running great so far.
