Hey!

My dealership is offering the life shine for £350, it seems really expensive for what it is. Anyone have experience with it on? Is it just as each to just skip it and keep car clean?

If you're going to spend that much then take it to a proper detailer who would definitely be able to give it a new car treatment for that price. The AutoGlym stuff from dealers is a bit of a scam because the pack costs them next to nothing and they just stick a massive markup on it. And it's nowhere near as good as getting a real detailer to do £350 worth of work to your car. My 2p. :)

I think you would be better off putting the £350 towards the cost of a professional detail.

Agree with the above. On top of that apparently the people who apply it at the dealership often have no idea what they are doing.

I had mine done properly and it cost £400 but it’s been done by a detailer who specialises in exactly that.

+1 for a detail, the car will look far better and have longer lasting protection...

I'm now facing this choice too. My big problem is living in a street lined with very tall trees, trees that b*****d pigeons just love to sit in after they've had breakfast. At certain times of the year I end up at the hand car wash up to 4 times a week! So, would the dealer or the detailer guarantee their treatment against the ravages of bird s**t?

To be honest, my outgoing car has been shat on '000's of times in the almost 10 years I've had it, and apart from 1 small mark, all the others fade away within a week. Embarrassingly, I've never had the car polished by anyone and have always used hand car washes......life's to short for car washing.

That said, the photo's I've seen on here of cars that have been detailed, are making me think of doing the same. Although, street parking and kerbs are probably a bigger issue to think about :disrelieved:

I really doubt they'd give any sort of guarantee anything. The kit I was given once for free had some quick detailer stuff included that was specifically for bird **** apparently though.

I'm firmly in the court of getting it detailed professionally though. A good ceramic coating should really help any potential damage from birds.

My last car ended up with some pretty nasty permanent bird poo marks on it which is the primary reason I paid for a proper detail. It all depends what the bird had for it’s dinner and on the state of the paintwork in the first place, the weather, how long it was there before you got it off etc.

I don’t think anyone will guarantee you won’t end up with marks at all as it’s impossible to protect against everything. You can hedge your bets though and personally I’d recommend getting it done. They protect the inside too which is useful if you have kids.

Agree about the car washing in general. The detailer who did my car sounded exasperated that people use hand car washes as they (allegedly) are not very careful with their methods but as you say, life is very short to be doing a 7 stage car wash yourself every week.

I had mine done by the dealer (west London Audi) as part of a deal. I'm not happy with them at all. They didn't bother to clean the car properly before applying the stuff.
However I can see the difference if I don't pay too much attention to detail. The rain and mist just rolls down and does not stay. My car always looks like it has been recently washed.

Can anyone recommend a product or kit to use day 1? I’m collecting Saturday and if there is something I can buy from Halfords to give it it’s first wash/protect until I can afford a professional detail I will give that a go?

To be honest most detailers would probably ask you to leave the paint completely untouched until you take it to them. If you start washing it yourself you could end up with swirl marks that subsequently get locked in.

However I guess it depends how long you are going to leave it !

Yes, I use autoglym wetwax from amazon Amazon product to protect my car and I use it everytime I wash, plus it comes with two microfibre clothes. Halfords sell them as well.
Though may I suggest you try this forum http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/forums/detailing-sponsored-by-slims-detailing.116/

Picking car up Saturday dealer phoned in the week and offered complementary guard x protection and gap insurance

Lucky you. I've been offered nothing, but maybe they'll say something when I go in tomorrow to sign the docs.

Have a try amount we are spending good luck

The guys at the dealerships just don't get enough time to apply the Autoglym products correctly, a good detail with protection would take all day from a good detailer and 2+ days if applying a ceramic protection, I reckon Audi allocates a couple of hours as the conveyor belt of cars move along for collection etc.

Spend the £350 on a reputable detailer, mine cost £370 including ceramic coating to paintwork, wheels and internal protection on carpets and seats, looks amazing.

I still wouldn't have guardx if they paid me £350. No doubt the person applying it will have no paintwork skills and will damage the paint so that it requires correcting..

I had Autoglym applied to a new A3 in 2014. The protection didn’t seem to last long and I’ve since learned from a detailer that the small print requires you to top up the protection at regular intervals or the so-called lifetime guarantee is void. Since I’ve had my A4 I’ve used only Autoglym Aquawax after each shampoo, like cuke2. 14 months on, the paintwork is fine and still has a lovely shine. Most importantly, when it rains I enjoy watching the water bead and run off. Aquawax is also dead easy to apply.

Same here. It's a huge profit margin for the dealers and without correct preparation they are just sealing in the poor paintwork. Sales people are given monthly targets for these products they have to hit (including GAP, tyre insurance). They are obviously short of these targets which is why they have reworked the deal to include them so they hit their targets and get paid their full bonus.

I had my car Ceramic Coated for £400 which included single stage correction.
I would never let a car dealer near my car - i sepcifically asked them not to prep the car before it was delivered (at the request of my detailer) however they washed it and he then spent a few hours undoing there work (for just one wash).

For £350 you can get your car a “new car detail”

Don’t give into the dealers, Autoglym and similar products are the biggest scam ever with dealerships.

Takes at least 2 days for a detailer to properly work on a new car.

I can certainly back cuke2u regarding guardx and dealer prep etc. The hassle I went through when I picked my A4 up and the condition it was hand over to me was absolutely diabolical, it now cost the dealer £1250 in refunds and then replacing most of the black trim and bumper valance etc, which not been done yet due to be done this Thursday. I won’t even let them wash it due their inexperience on paint work etc And lack of time. It all about profit to them to get these cars out.

Ryan - which C Quartz product are you getting applied, and how much is it costing you if you don't mind me asking? Just that I am getting C Quartz finest after collecting my car tomorrow, goes in to the detailers for it doing on Thursday, I have asked the dealership not to do any external cleaning of the car.

For what it is worth life shine is a reasonable product - it's just the how it is applied that causes the problems. Dealerships do it in about 2 hours or so, it's absolutely impossible to apply a product like that in that space of time. The product then fails and the product then gets blamed.

The detailer told me it was ‘cQuartz’ didn’t say if it was finest or anything. He runs a mobile detailer business (heard nothing but good things) and charging £200 to wash and apply. How about you? I was torn between that or just buying the £50 autoglym kit and keeping it clean myself

A new car will need at least one machine polish to correct any paint imperfections from the factory and remove any contaminants. A wash then a application of a ceramic coat will not do at all as any imperfections and contaminants will just be sealed in...

I didn’t need any corrections on my new car!

I picked my car up untouched and didn’t let the dealership wash or prep it. I used the many stages of contaminant and prep.

I used CQuartz which was the top rated product on detailing world. However I have found it DOESN’T protect against scratches as advertised. I would be tempted to try GTechniq next time. I used the GTechniq products in the interior and windows.

No ceramic coating will protect against all scratches and the coating itself can get them. I know you did your car yourself but I do not have the facilities to do this myself. However our next house will have a double garage and the facilities so I can assemble my own kit car, hopefully next year if things go to plan...

Im paying £800 for the full exterior and interior protection. He is going to have it a full week mind you to do it properly.

Scottish - as Cuke said, no coating will protect from scratches fully. The best protection for that is a wrap. I’ve never spoken to anyone who has anything bad to say about c quartz.

That sounds about right for the amount of work you are having done. I hope you are just impressed with the results as I was with mine...

I understand that. I know it won’t protect against all scratches although it is meant to protect against light scratches......it doesn’t!
It’s a right pain to apply.
And Cquartz wheel sealent is rubbish. Will defo be trying GTechniq next time.

All ceramic coatings are a challenge to apply correctly, particularly if you’re doing out in the open and not in a controlled environment. It’s good to go try different products but I honestly think you’ve not had the c quartz applied correctly.

If you apply g techniq yourself be really careful with their glass sealant, the most horrendous product I’ve experienced to remove. You might not have the same trouble hopefully!
