...well it is Halloween!!! :)

I'm posting this here as I've only just sold my S3 and I know I lot of you guys on here are looking at the Autowatch Ghost system after the recent spate of S3 thefts around the country.

The majority of us on here are complete and utter petrol heads, who spend small fortunes looking after our cars and are OCD when it comes to where we leave them and who we let work on them! so it's nice to share good experiences ;)

I had my system fitted today at www.apmcustoms.co.uk who are based just outside Chester in the North West. I called in there last week to see what their setup was like and who would be touching my car!!! Straight from the off I felt at ease, the place was spotless, Kev and Vicky are very friendly, knowledgable about what they sell and are obviously petrol heads who love cars as much as we do :) We spent more time chatting about cars in general than we did about the Ghost system lol. I had no hesitation what so ever about booking my car in with them to fit the Ghost system.

So today I tuned up at around 9.15 to get it fitted, they were expecting me and took my car inside straight away, Vicky offered me a drink and then left me to watch the videos of the other things that they do down there, which you can see on their website! Just under an hour later Kev said the system had been fitted and was ready to go! He invited me through to the workshop to show me how the system worked and talked me through all the settings etc.

It was an OCD car owners dream (as good as the extreme parking thread on here :p), nothing near my car other than the tools required to do the job ;)

I had phoned Kev on Monday to discuss the different options of setting it up and decided to go for the gearbox lock option. I've made a short video so you can see how it works:

It's a great little system and not that expensive when you consider how much it would cost if your car were to go missing! It also has a valet mode which is easily set by entering your code and then pushing a certain button 5 times, this allows the vehicle to be moved around without the need of giving anyone a code, once the car goes over 30mph for 3-15 minutes (installation dependant) and is stopped the full system kicks back in. The valet mode would be handy if you were just taking the car to be cleaned or have a basic service and it was only going to be moved around a yard etc.

You can change the main code to your own choice which is easy enough to do once you put it in learning mode (all the instructions come with it).

If the worst were to happen and one of your code buttons were to break or you forgot your code, there is a card with a code on that is unique to your car that you can use to get the car going/change the code.

The RRP price for the system fitted is £399.

That's awesome! Would actually love to see a thief's face being unable to put it into gear :D

Any reason as to why you went for the Gear Box lock?

Thanks for your info. Going to see about getting one fitted myself.

Same question as djalix , my concern would be that someone’s in such a panic / rush to steal it that they really use some force of the gear stick and cause some further damage.

Looks a great system overall though.

No reason to be honest, just looked at the options and that took my fancy ;) The good thing about that way is if you keep trying to put it into gear it throws up a Audi fault code "Drivetrain fault, please visit workshop". Which once you put your code in and drive of it clears :) So a thief could just think they have picked a faulty car or just done something wrong! They want to be in and away, this system stops that, they are not going to want and try to fix it!

As for forcing it, nothing to force, it just springs back.

Yeah I think it's good to point out that the gearbox lock option, I believe, is only available on cars with a 'digital' sort of gear selector like the A5/S5... I don't think it works one one where you physically move the whole lever like on A3/S3 if that makes sense

Therefore as said, nothing to force as such, so it's not going to break anything

My only fear with that is what if the thief decides to go back into your house and threaten you and you family with a knife unless you tell him how to get it to work.

Then at that point you just let them have it I guess. Still better to have the ghost I think on the chance the thief might not come back in

A lot of thefts are done without needing to have the original keys! They have a device to open your car, make the car think there is a key present and then they take it, they try that thinking that they will be there 2 minutes....it doesn't work and an error code is thrown up on the dash...so now their allocated time for taking your car is gone = putting them more at risk of getting caught!

So the last thing they will be wanting to do is spend more time breaking into your house to find the owner to get him to tell them how to start it!!!! They haven't come with any tools to break into your house, so are they going to hang around or are they going to get off? If they came into my house they will also be at risk! At least if I'm out, in work etc my car will be there when I get back, if nobody is around to tell them the code they aren't starting it :)

We could go on forever with "But what if they do this that and the other". No matter how safe you are or what you use, if they want it badly enough they will take it, even if it means hanging around your house waiting for you to come out:

Both of these thefts if they had a ghost system would have been stopped:

Many cars still use the old style keys so they would likely still try to get into your house.

I assume you have the advanced key so the above doesn't apply.

It's not the full advanced key, I still need to push to unlock, but they don't need any key with new tech! As for old style keys, yes they may break into the house to get them, but if they can't start it/move it away they are taking a chance hanging around and coming back in! If you worry about them coming back in to get you, you may as well just leave your keys in the car and let them take it and do away with the entire breaking into your house part!

Using the 1st vid above for example, they pull up and hit the bloke and fight for his keys...by this time more people are coming to his aid and the police have been called....do they now want to hang around any longer trying to get the code off him??? No, they are after a quick in and out. So if they had jumped into his car with the keys and it wouldn't start/move what would they do...run!

My only fear with that is what if the thief decides to go back into your house and threaten you and you family with a knife unless you tell him how to get it to work.
If car won't start it could be broken, how would they know otherwise + thieves don't have time for that. In out gone. They won't hang around.

Off topic but do you have some sort of paddle extensions?

I was advised by the first installer I contacted NOT to get the app for that reason. All the facts aren't out yet, so it will be interesting to see what the end result is, but I think this guy summed it up well:
RS Member said:
An awful lot of hypotheses here based on pure speculation. I'm not a believer in letting a good rumour get in the way of the truth so I will watch with interest if the actual reason for the theft is ever added to this thread. The installer may not be involved in the theft, but the installation could be the problem. If it was installed incorrectly by a non-approved installer or if there was human error involved in the installation process, the ghost may not have functioned correctly.

So before condemning the product, let's wait for the facts. Always buy from an Autowatch approved installer. The most experienced is Chris Preston from Veil Tuning. His unbeatable deal is below. He has personally fitted well over 500 now. None of his installs have failed and a few have been subject of attempted thefts. The ghost is the most effective security device you can buy. This unique incident does nothing to disprove that at the moment. If you are on the verge of getting a Ghost fitted, don't delay because of this incident. All the RS's stolen to date have not had any extra security, and the Ghost is the best you can buy.

If car won't start it could be broken, how would they know otherwise + thieves don't have time for that. In out gone. They won't hang around.

They do look nice, so they get in the way of the dials though? As I don’t want to go covering up my virtual cockpit. Not that I ever really use the paddles anyways but they just look smart

No, I haven't found them to ;)

@The Challinor just been out especially for you :) Took these so you can see the finish and also how much they add extra to the potential target area to change gear!

The last view is from eye level-dash when driving.

Judging by the comments of the guy affected AND the timing of the theft sounds suspicious and either a flaw with ghost on mk2 focus rs cars only and/or an issue with the way it was installed. He did say go to an authorised installer or contact autowatch direct so i think that says it all

Yeah you are probably right, could just be a case of "You get what you pay for".

My mate came around to look at the new car, I gave him the keys and said take it for a spin (he didn't know about the ghost :p), he started it and tried to drive off....he thought he'd broken it :D

Lol Steve that was bad, I bet your friend was horrified. :) x

Had the Ghost fitted to my S4 today, seems like a very impressive system and feel safer knowing that it's there.

One thing that he mentioned that I hadn't heard before is there is a hijack mode that can be activated, basically if one of the doors are opened when the car is on, it activates unless you keep your foot on the brake. When activated you have to enter the code again, if the code is not entered before the car has been driven 300m the hazard lights will start to flash, then a short while later when the car comes to a stop again , all lights flash, alarm triggers and car can't go into gear.

It will take a bit of getting used to when picking people up and dropping them off, but this is definitely a good feature in my opinion.

Yep it is a good system, :) I think the hijack system is dependant on the car it's fitted to...doesn't work with all cars/models...not 100% sure on that though, so if you want it check!
