Ok so firstly this isn't about MPG! more than happy with that - 2500k miles in and averaging 28 MPG.
But i'm confused by the range / tank size.
Filled up the other day, range said 25 miles left and I had covered 328 miles, so based on my usual commuting pattern I knew this was about right.
I could only get 51 litres in, looking back over my fuel history on road trip I can only ever get between 48 -51 litres in.
This either means, a) I've got a lot more fuel left in the tank then I think I have, or b) the tank isn't 58 litres.

Thoughts?

I'd imagine it's just that there's more left in the tank that you imagine and that the car indicates.

Although different, when the fuel light comes on on my bike, I usually still have about 5 litres left. To put it in perspective, the tank is only 17 litres total!

8500 miles 30 fuel ups logged, 51.2 was the best I ever got!

What was your best mpg over those miles out of curiosity? I'll be doing a decent number of dual carriageway miles so good mpg would be nice for that. Obviously I'm not expecting much on the more fun drives...

54.76 litres is the best I've got.
Last tank 29.36mpg which is the highest so far, lowest 25.67mpg. Impressive tbh.

@Keef - Hows the mpg compare with your old B8.5 S4 mate ?

Best so far is 37.8mpg on the way back from Heathrow, but as I had a little fun close to home it went down to 37.1.
That was driving in efficiency, but I wasn't exactly hanging about

Can't imagine getting better than that, it's very impressive considering the size of the car and the power it has. Thanks for the feedback!

All I know is, my highest range available has been 450 miles at fill up. I do 'pull out' () and dribble as much as possible in there after the auto stop happens on the pump. Averaging 30mpg long term. They should have given it a 60 litre tank but weight saving and all that. Been better than the B8.5

So it would seem I still have 6-7 litres to play with when I fill up, just not brave (or stupid) enough to run until empty to check.
...remember when I said this post wasn't about MPG:tonguewink:

@Bristle Hound my old S4 averaged 24mpg
Over the course of ownership, so new one is already better and should still improve!

Driving down to St Ives, Cornwall next week so hopefully so good figures from that.

I have picked up a couple of B9 A4's and S4's from dealer compounds for the drive back to Norfolk with them showing the red fuel warning and zero miles range on the DIS. The journey to a filling station is always a worry but I have not failed yet! What does always surprise me is, I normally put in £20 of fuel which then puts the contents lights to the half way mark so there must be quite a bit in reserve when zero miles range showing. I don't have the bottle to see how far I could go!!

Depending on what happened before you got it, there could be quite a lot... An A4 I test drive got to the red so I put 15 litres in just to drive some more and be nice with how much fuel I put it back to Audi with. The gauge didn't show any additional bars at all! Drove 80 or so more miles and the red was flashing at me but I knew there was still plenty fuel in it.

The best MPG I've ever had is just over 41 mpg. My average over the last 8000 miles is 35 mpg. The most i have ever paid to fill up my tank is £60.

I (honestly unintentionally) was stupid enough to find out. Having got the range down to zero and set the trip meter to zero, I've found that you can actually go another 25 (2.0 TFSI B7- not S4) or so miles before getting a slap from the wife for being so stupid.

The really stupid thing is as that I now almost always end up setting the trip meter to zero and frequently get just over 69 litres in the tank!

The most I've squeezed into my B8.5 was 62 litres. When I said to the chap on the till that the tank size is 61 litres he asked if I spilled some on the forecourt...

Apart from that (presumably badly calibrated pump, vehemently denied by aforementioned chap) the highest has been 60 litres. Usually with zero on the range for 10-20 miles.

You lot are much braver than me. I have 65 miles range left, it's 25 miles home and I'm wondering whether to fill up before I leave. :D

Should be fine if you don't cane the engine, I've had mine down to 30 miles remaining before...

Had mine on 5 miles, 3 mile journey. The B8.5 was on zero for 4 miles a while back. Just a case of playing chicken haha.

Out of curiosity, running it til it chokes out...do any damage?

Petrol? Don't think so
Diesel? - yeah, well they always said you shouldn't run out of diesel, but this might be on the old PD diesel engines, because you have to manually pump the fuel to get it back working again.

There is the other aspect of dredging all the crap that's in the tank, and blocking filters for both.

If you want to test go ahead, while you at it, there's a story that peeing in the tank helps ... maybe you could try that too :D

An old habit, but each new vehicle I am anxious to find out just how low I can go. Trust me, in this beautiful land with long distances, it pays to know. Have deliberately run out of fuel before, but with the manual stating DO NOT run out of fuel, and the amount of technology in this S4, not willing to try.
Last fill, @ 803kms (500miles), with the virtual cockpit glowing the 'reserve' @ 100km to go, saw 57.06 litres to bowser 'click', with 10km to go.
As I had at least a 400km trip ahead of me, I put in another 2 litres in the expansion tank.

Curious - I notice thru the thread members quoting litres and miles and mpg. Down Under we talk only litres and 'litres per 100km'. Are your petrol stations in litres or gallons.
Trivia - Local current 98 octane price is AUD$1.40 per litre (GBP 2.25 per litre).

We use litres for filling up but mpg (UK gallon @ 4.4 litres rather than US @ 3.8 litres) for economy as the speed limits and distances are in miles rather than km. Don't know why it's such a mix.

I don't know where you got your trivia from but according to trusty Google, aUD$1.40 is actually £0.86, not £2.25... I was thinking that must be some of the most expensive fuel on the planet!

Struuuuth! £2.25 is expensive for 98 Oct!
Besides, the cars mapped to run on 95 Oct, so the benefits of paying for 98 wouldn't be a lot! ;)

500 miles???? I've had 450 max.

To be honest I don't think I have ever filled up a car to the "capacity" stated by the manufacturer.

OOPS!!...talk about brainfade!!! Sorry.
Was attempting to do creative accounting @ 1.30am. I did start with google but c--ked up the formula.
Now irrelephant as fuel went up AUD$0.20 a litre overnight.
Apparently, in Australia, a group of oil companies that raise and lower petrol by similiar amounts and with consistently similiar timing isn't a cartel.

Haha, that's fair enough. Although AUD$0.20 is now super cheap! ;)

We're very similar in the UK, they claim it's down to the bulk price they're buying oil for in the refineries but it seems to go up even when the price of oil has remained consistently low. Go figure.

So it is true. I did see a test on youtube where the dynoed a car on the recommended fuel, then drained the tank and re-ran on the dyno with higher octane fuel, with nil difference. It would have been nice if they drained the lines, filter etc. as well.
In Aust., there appears to be a strong opinion that our 98 is not quite the same as the your 98.

Octane is an international standard, so there is no "mine is different to yours", but you get different forms of octane rating!

There is RON (Research Octane Number), MON (Motor Octane Number) and PON (Pump Octane Number)....PON is (RON + MON) / 2

So it depends what is more widely used in your country, in the UK we measure octane in RON and it is the most common method, but in the US they use PON. So our 99 RON fuel is like their 95 PON fuel.

You need to find out what units of measurement they use in Australia before you can compare apples to apples, because comparing PON or MON to RON is like chalk & cheese, they are not the same things.

450?! Max I've had so far is 340

I'm referring to 'range', not actual haha. Although, in all honesty? An average week running to and from work, I get about 410 miles.

I've read in the manual for A4 B6 1.8t Quattro that the fuel light comes on with 8 litres reserve, I'd imagine it'd be the same across the car range.

It truly is how you drive. So for last two weeks I've been off work and it's down to 380 range when I fill up and I'm getting about 340. Obviously in dynamic 90% of the time!

I've got 30 fill-ups logged and max fill-up is 55.19. Have one other over 55, and a couple of other high 54s That would probably have been with 10 miles or less on the range. Longest range per tank 387 miles. Average currently 30.13 mpg over 9700 miles

I guess its good to see that we're all pretty much getting the same. It's the perfect compromise performance car I think.

37mpg this morning on S4... 55 miles, mix of A road, dual carriage way, motorway - stuck to speed limits , though a few nice acceleration blasts from roundabouts onto dual carriage way... Only 150 miles on clock - impressive fuel economy already. It's a relaxed cruiser in efficiency mode...
