Depends on your definition of 'outperforms'... I change my oil every 12 months (5k or less) and I doubt it would matter for most service intervals of 6-9k miles either but it would be a cold day in hell before I put 5w30 in my engine...
I ran in using 10w40 mineral dropping it after the initial run in period on the dyno then after 300 miles of low boost but loaded driving without revving the engine out... swapped over to 5w40 after that and been running it ever since..
Found an interesting link on VAG oil specs though
http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php
504.00 spec 5w30 is designed for the long life changes so by definition you could argue it 'outperforms' 505.01 but... its still 5w30 and its 'performance' is based on the assumption its going to stay in the engine for longer... both of these points mean its a no go for me even considering the fact if you used 504.00 on fixed interval oil changes suggesting that it shouldn't have degraded as much as the 505.01 its still 5w30...
Factor in things like track day use etc that can take oil temps well over 100 degrees then you have to base your oil change strategy on use rather than based on intervals...
