Facelift Clicking sound at low speeds?

Mark, Please could you explain about the clicking you got from the st? I have an st200 and am experiencing a clicking noise at low speeds too (seems to be when I brake) cheers buddy :)

Yeah, it was a clicking noise coming from the front, heard it when at low speeds and cornering with the windows down. Not heard otherwise. After a while, felt very small vibrations through the steering wheel. Classic CV failure or busted splines.

Jesus, another steering rack failure!! Just wait till they check the order status of the rack and see its on back order :lmfao: The head of Audi UK CS had to put in a special request for mine, it was taken out of the factory!!

Is the clicking turning side to side? Or one side in particular? Can you feel a resistance? Mention my case if you want, be wary. My wheel bearing was worn 2 months later, the car was gone another 3 weeks.

I can't recall to be honest, I heard it on and off the throttle at low speeds, most evident when parking tbh. I shall ask them to check the wheel bearings then when they call me to say it's ready.

I have this clicking noise when turning, almost like a bic biro being flicked off something if that makes any sense?

Yeah, sounds similar. I'd get her to the dealer for a check up.

It is on the steering, left to right turn applications.. you'd only hear it at low speed. Bad how two racks have failed. Mine was 2000 miles later, the n/s wheel bearing started making a similar clicking noise when manouvering. They came back and said the bearing was moving in the housing, the bearing was smooth but just had that excess play.

Might have just been coincidence with mine, but could have been connected to damage that the rack had done. Contact Audi CS and ask for compensation, supplying dealer needs to battle it for you. Send me a PM and I will tell you what I had in return exactly if you want, but it was a contribution towards the RS3 and 2 new tyres because I had excessive wear on the fronts after them diagnosing two steering faults at low speed.

Do you get this only when cornering Mark ? I’m hearing something when pottering along in traffic at 5mph admittedly it’s very faint and maybe I’ve just not listened before with air con and radio off so it could be normal.

Mark's is very similar to mine, it happens under left / right turning applications. I heard mine clunking inside at a standstill with the windows up.

What annoys me about the AA comig out (who are usually excellent) is that they dont know Audi anymore than they know other brands and therefore are at a bit of a loss.

They do arrange a car for you but only for 3 days and something such as thia can take longer to diagnose and fix.
When I used audi assist they gave me the option of the aa within an hour, or a audi technician, aprox three hours. As my gearbox had failed I chose the latter...

As @AudiNutta said really mate!

In other news, the car is now fixed and I'll be collecting it today. However, I am now going down the route of rejecting the car with Audi finance as we speak - I'm not convinced that this car isn't a lemon and don't want to be left high and dry with something that keeps going wrong. We'll see what happens and if Audi commit to replacing the car. I'll keep you posted peeps!

Good luck with that, hopefully they are sensible and realise this really is a lemon and sort a fast replacement.

Sorry to hear that Mark, hopefully you're looking to replace with another S3 though.

Wow, what a good turnaround! Why the sudden change of heart to reject?

Most likely.

Well, after discussions with Audi CS, it was agreed that this wasn't very good (duh) and she outlined my options. Essentially, if something went wrong again, I'd loose my chance to reject as I'm passed 6 months, so if I'm going to hand it back and get another (?) then I need to do it now really.

Oh right, fair play to them for telling you that.. that's great. Well you have nothing to lose, try and reject now and if it isn't accepted then you've lost nothing. I would have thought they would need to seriously think about it because of the repeat problems. I think with rejection they keep you in your own car until the new one arrives, normally.

Are you going to go for the same car/spec again?

Yeah, I mean they've been pretty good about it. The only issue I've got is that it'll now be on the new tax system as she was over £40k and I've done over the 5k mileage limit as I changed jobs. I'm prepared to accept the increased tax if they're prepared to accept the extra mileage, so hopefully we can sort that one out.

Most probably. Unsure if I'll change colour... I can't make an RS3 stack up financially either (both in purchase cost and running cost). The other option I was considering was switching to an S4 Avant... all rather academic until I know what Audi are prepared to do.

I'm sure both with the problems you've had Mark and the fact you're willing to stay with the brand that they'll write off the mileage. If they don't then it shows how bothered they really are!

Recently saw a black edition white S4 avant, it looked and sounded ****** lovely. If the S4 is affordable that's where I would be going.

Love the RS3 but it's silly money for a hatch.

The mileage doesn't really add up to a lot if that is the deal breaker, 1000 miles over would cost £130 I think. The new tax system is a downside, lots for you to add up really to see if it's feasible.

Where you mention running costs of the RS3, there isn't much between them. The servicing is the same, brakes are double but you should only need them once every 30k or so. The fuel isn't much different, 5mpg or so less on the average of each tank.
