Hi mates,

What are the dimensions of a number plate festoon bulb for A3 8P Sportback ?
I want to buy led festoon bulb but I'm not sure is it 39mm or 36mm.
When I measure bulb, it says between 37mm and 38mm. Which one to take 39mm or 36mm?

P.S. If I take CANBUS led would there be any erors on board computer?

if you take the canbus shouldn't be any error message, I've got this ones: bulbs and they are tight fit, however 39mm will be better than 36mm.

You can get the bulbs from @t8ups. The ones on eBay tend to be 6000K and is too white (almost with a blueish tint) while the lights from @t8ups tend to have a more OEM colour temperature.

Thanx, but I will order bulbs from AliExpress. Just wanna know are they signalizing OBC errors. There are plenty of CANBUS LEDs on AliExpress,
but not sure about dimensions should I get 36mm or 39mm. 38mm would be ideal but they don't make 38mm!
Another thing is should I get bulb with 5050 smd or 4014? 4014smd model bulb have 12smd diodes and much more lux/wat than 5050.

If you bought the bulbs with loom from @t8ups at least you'd work first time with no errors. Lots of people have bought canbus led's and still had a bulb fault thrown up.

Or you could buy a whole new light with led instead of the bulb holder

The LEDs from AliExpress will work no doubt... But from experience I can tell you within a few weeks if you're unlucky they will start developing faults. Flickering at start and eventually dead. Given it's number plate lights and you may not spot it before the police does, would you take the risk?

By the way, I'm not dismissing AliExpress as a legitimate source by the way since I've had great success with things like puddle and door warning lights and looms at 1/5 price of kits sold on here, but the question is given the volume of sellers, how do you know which one will give you better quality lights and what happens when a fault develops?

I know there are LED modules for licence plate but they are way more expensive than led bulbs. I'll risk with led bulbs from AliExpress.
They could be found below 2 euros per bulb and free shipping which is very rare for my country if I buy from Western Europe or North America.
A the end which dimension is better to take 36 or 39mm? At some web sites I've found genuine led bulbs for A3 are 36mm, but I've measured 37,8mm my original bulbs as I sad before.

I've bought A5 LED Genuine ones (the complete light units) and they don't work on my 2006 without throwing an error and not working.
I didn't like the idea of fitting resistors as I didn't want a physically hot wire tucked away in my tailgate.
Next I tried the complete LED light units that come from China, the ones that look like Genuine A5 units but have loads more LED's (the A5 ones only have 2 LEDs and they aren't very bright at all) and these were good for a while.
Nice light output and good colour but they were a poor fit, I had to use a Dremel to file them down to fit and despite my best efforts water somehow got in and slowly, over a period of about 6 months the LEDs began to die off, one by one.
Recently I've removed these cheapo units and have replaced them with the original light units I took out, fitted with 36mm Canbus festoon bulbs and they've been the best by far......so far!
Many sellers approximate the size; 38mm is too big to fit the bulb-holder properly and they will not seat securely, in this case smaller really is better.
In retrospect, canbus LED festoon bulbs in the original factory bulb holder is the the option I should have taken from the start , and the one I'd now recommend to others.

If I understood you well you recommend something like THIS. There are many festoon LEDs at AliExpress but I like these with 4014 smd because of their lumen/current consumption ratio.
Which led canbus festoon bulbs (brand name) you put at the end and did you have to reset error on OBC and how long do you use them?

Yes, I fitted ones like you've linked to above, although mine were much more expensive, I paid about £5 the pair?
They've been in for about 6 weeks and are still working perfectly.
My car has auto lights and so I'd say that every time the car gets used in the dark (virtually daily) the lights end up being checked by me, and so far, no errors or dead individual LED's.
My reluctance to use individual festoon bulbs had been because I thought that as the bulbs in theory are able to rotate in the bulbholder, they might have appeared to be of different brightness left and right when installed.
This was not the case at all, with the same brightness being apparent on both sides.

Yes, you're right because tiny diodes are mounted just on one side of bulb, and a bulbholder is not so tight to hold still bulb hole time.
I guess engineers predicted that situation and the LED bulb has enough lumens (brightness) to shine from any position in the bulbholder.
Otherwise you were lucky not to hit the chuckhole or speed bumb :)

Nevertheless 4014 , 5630 and 3030 smd LED give much more brightness than original festoon bulbs!
I think twice now which one LEDs to choose from 4014, 5630 or 3030 smd LEDs?!

A quick Google search is your friend.
http://www.saving-star.com/smd-led-comparison/ and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMD_LED_Module

3030 will be insanely bright for number plates. Best stick to 5630 or if you want something to "show off" 4014 haha.

Heck now I'm tempted!

I used these bulbs...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252461170376
which appear to be 4014?
When I fitted the Chinese complete LED light units they were incredibly bright and I found that the reflection of each individual SMD LED was visible in the paintwork of the rear bumper , but with these festoon bulbs , even though they are very bright there is no such reflection, and looks much more 'factory'.
These festoon bulbs are so much better IMHO.

I'll definetely take 4014 LEDs, but I wonder is there any other light/bulb in the car that uses festoon 36mm bulb besides number plate?

On a3 all (or almost) lights are w5 bulbs (position light) don't know the ones over the head but others are w5 as well in boot are w5.

Yeah I know they are mostly W5, but are they all festoon 36mm type bulbs like in number plate bulb holder?

or your question got no clue or I'm not understanding you or you confusing W5 that is type with 5W mean power consimption in Watt (5 Watt in this case), anyways

I know W5 is power consumption. I meant on bulb type and in this case festoon bulb type like in image you've posted above.
Also festoon bulb's consumption is 5W, but their label is C5W. So, my question was is there any other festoon bulb 36mm in the car except in number plate?

OK, my mistake. Mixed up 5W with W5. My question was is there any other 36mm festoon bulb except in number plate?

I can't remember the exact dimensions (they might be 37 or 38mm?) but I know that when I did a complete LED re-lamp of the interior lights of my car I used 3 festoon bulbs , 1 in the vanity light in each sun-visor and 1 in the overhead console .

I've looked up on ETKA site and they say only 2 festoon 36mm bulbs in vanity lights in interior of car and that's it.

My car has the panoramic sunroof and there's definitely a third festoon bulb in the overhead console housing the sunroof switch , along with two other smaller bulbs.......

Definitely I've have just two festoon 36mm bulbs in number plate and that's! I don't have vanity lights in sun-visors (big blow for Audi, many cheaper cars have it standardly) and sun roof...

At the end I've bought these 4014 36mm festoon bulbs and for now (they arrived 5 days ago) they are great. No errors on CB, great visibility and two bulbs for 1.2 euros I'am thrilled... How long they will work we w'll see...

I've just checked my car and appear to have posted incorrect info sorry.
I have a festoon bulb in each sun visor, as well as 2 in the central roof mounted light unit (not the single bulb I posted previously) as well as 2 smaller (BA9S?) non-festoon bulbs as map reading lights.

As someone said before these chinese 4014 36mm festoon bulbs won't last for long time! They've worked couple weeks, and then started to blink when I drive car more than 10 minutes and at the end one bulb is dead and the other is blinking all the the time. I don't know is it because of bad quality of bulbs, great bulb warming or something else. Maybe to buy another type festoon led bulbs with less number of SMD; these 4014 have 12 SMD, maybe to take bulb with 3 or 4 SMD or to buy totally different type of LED bulbs. What about these Cree LED bulbs, they have great britness and only two cree led chips? But would they last longer than these 4014???
