So after emptying the battery compartment of water and getting that all sorted ,I was checking voltages in the fuse box/relay box next to the air box when I managed to short the far right +ve feed to ground....some nice sparks.
So now the ESP and and steering lights are permanently on but no codes in either Torque or Carista,I have checked the dashboard fuses and they seem okay are there any others to check......?, or have I really killed it this time ?

Get VCDS along with Elsawin wiring diagrams and fuse plans!

Turn the steering wheel full lock left and full lock right

^^This^^
Probably just wants a manual reset, it's fairly common for those 2 to come on together if the power has been interrupted

Check the fuses. Shorting an input power supply to any module doesn't damage the module itself. It would overheat the wire from the battery and burn the fuse if there was one in series to the point where you shorted it.

Don't worry

I absolutely give up with this piece of crap , its too dangerous, too unreliable and I just cannot justify spending whatever vcds and elsawin costs.
Its going to the scrappy on Wednesday.
Lesson well and truly learnt !!!, I'm 3k out of pocket and its going to cost me 6 train journeys a day to get to work.........****** off, ****** off and had enough.

Steady on mate, don't loose heart with it. Sometimes fault codes can be proper scary, but more often than not they are just a product of something minor.
I spent almost 5 years in 3.2 A3 dsg's and loved every minute.
My second one had a rattly chain when i bought it and had running issues. The chain was replaced by the dealer but it still had running issues.
I then spent 12 months chasing the cause and it turned out to be a simple software update. It was a dream after that.
You'll always get problems with older cars and the A3 3.2dsg is a complicated beast, but when sorted is a dream.
Yours may need the update too, try holding the revs at 2k while parked and see if the revs hold steady, if not you need the update!
Did you do the manual steering reset?

I've done nothing with it , moved it off the drive and onto the road and left unlocked, I've had it that much with it.
I have wasted hours trying to find information , any information I can find tells me it need an ABS pump and probably a steering rack ..........it just simply isn't going to happen.
Never had so much grief trying to find information , manuals diagrams etc. Found a company called emanuals online, spent a fair few pounds buying and downloading so called repair and maintenance manuals - utterly useless.

If you're having this much trouble with it then you need to start by going to a garage or someone that has VCDS so you can see all the fault codes on the car before you start throwing your cash and your time at it and start from there.

The taste just got a little sweeter.........actually maybe closer to rose flavoured
