Hi Guys,

I am noticing a pattern emerging, a lot of people selling up their RS3's after a year or so tops. Looking at the maintenance costs, normal servicing doesn't seem much worse than an S3? I've seen a few comments that people get rid because it will cost them money to keep it? Surely it costs more to change so early? I can't see any sense in why people uplift them so soon. I am only getting 23-26mpg average in the S3, the RS3 isn't a whole lot worse.

Now this concerns me, being in an S3 now I have the difficult decision of S3 to RS3 and if it's worth the extra £15k in the end. One thing I don't want to do, is a few years down the line regret selling the S3...

I am planning on changing to an RS3 when the FL is released, just a matter of timing because my S3 will only be a year old in October and I know changing too soon will cost me a fortune. Most likely I will order one when the demonstrators arrive, hoping that it will arrive to suit a March 18 delivery, until then I am more than content with the S3 it is an awesome car and does make you question everything, especially now it's a little louder with a centre resonator delete. But, it will never be an RS3.. I just need a reminder of what the RS is all about, on the look out for my dealer getting an Approved one in :p

Just stumbled across this one, another forum member sold up?!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2015-Audi...136820?hash=item3f7616ab74:g:-xkAAOSwCU1YrCnx

Regards,
Matthew. :salute:

I think there is a lot of reasons not so simple as it seems in first place. Some maybe loose there jobs, marriage, extra kid arrived :), they have the money to spend on swapping to a new meaner /faster car, wrong setup because it was used when they bought it, colour, maybe plan was 1 to 1 1/2 year from the beginning and so on. Probably a lot of more excuses or reasons to sell it. It is the worst ownership to swap early but everyone is different and doing what's the best for them :).

Well you seem to be planning exactly the same thing with your S3, upgrading to the RS3. Maybe the others are doing the same or have different reasons as has been said...

Mine, it's a keeper...!

Top range performance car some sell to move onto next toy some to minimise depreciation. All sorts reasons it's normal on these types of cars

That was @JimboS3 car that you've found on eBay. He looked after it well. It's missing the tech pack but what a great colour.

Like you, I get confused at the amount of people who seem to sell up early. I can't understand why. I wouldn't let it put you off though.

I suppose, the RS3 was always the goal for me and the S3 was just to fill the bug until it was possible.. but now I've fallen for the S3 :D

I'm very excited to drive the RS3 when it comes back anyway, but I won't be changing if I have to spend thousand to get out of the S3 because I have no good reason to.

I thought I recognised it, it is a very nice car and colour.

I guess I just wanted to ask the question worried that many people have bought in with good intentions and realised they are money pits. Not expecting it to be cheap by any means, but I couldn't see why so many would want to change so early.. it is one hell of a machine.

6 months ago it wouldn't have mattered, I just want to make sure I don't end up regretting selling the S3 which I am sure I won't judging by what those have said who have made the move between the two. Whatever car I have in 12 months time, whether it be my S3 or an RS3 it will be a keeper and will be the car I pay off. I'd rather have an older RS car kept in warranty and have money freed up to move out, than have to downgrade to get a new car to free the money up.

I think the rs3 is cheap to run esp compared to other rs cars m cars ect

I've known 3 rs3 owners who have sold in under 2 years. All had hotish cars before the RS (TTS, focus RS, 330d).

2 lasted a year and then went for bigger things, RS6 and M4. The other got a works van

I genuinely think it is the perfect stepping stone car. It gets you hooked on proper performance and the emotional side of a sports car and it means you have a few quid to throw at a car. Combine those and i think it's only a matter of time before people want more and have the money to do it.

For the foreseeable future it wouldn't be a stepping stone it would be my goal. I would love an RS6 ;)

I test drive an Approved Used RS4 a few weeks back, wow.. what a car. The noise it makes on down shifts, almost like it's digging deep.. I could never, ever hear enough of that noise.

I'm gutted I can't buy one new.

I've driven an rs5 with a non res exhaust and all I can say is wow! Absolutely insane noise!

I heard an RS6 leaving the dealer a couple of months ago with an Akrapovic exhaust.. holy :O That was a brutal noise

But, I still stand by the 4.2 being the better sounding engine.

It is. No turbos in the exhaust sucking up the sound.

Well in my opinion the RS3 is certainly not a money pit (other than the monthly PCP payment of course ). Compared to my previous performance cars (Audi's and BMW's) the RS3 is very reasonable to run, it''s not in the top bracket to tax, the insurance is one of the cheapest I have had for years (I am over 50), its pretty good on fuel but only if you can bring yourself to driving it ..... errrrrrr, sensibly (not very often, ha ha), tyres are way cheaper than anything I have fitted to my previous cars (the rubber on my BMW was £300 a corner) and the servicing costs are as expected for an RS car.

Why do people sell up so quickly? Don't really know, all sorts of reasons I imagine. Maybe the monthy payments don't fit their budgets anymore, maybe they need more space for an expanding family, maybe some upgrade to something else like an RS6/7, Some may have got frustrated with the squealing brakes issue and then I guess some just get bored and want to try something else.

Overall, its a great little package that pays back with more smiles per mile than anything else I have owned so far. But there has also been an unexpected side to ownership. I suspect other owners have experienced this too .......... I am refering to being stopped in petrol stations by people I have never met before wanting to have a closer look at the car, passengers hanging out of a window on the motorway taking pictures of my car on their phones, Youtuber's following me into the car park at motorsport events filming the car and asking me to do launch control , people (youngsters usually) at zebra crossings asking me to 'rev it', and weirdly I even had a guy on motor cycle follow me for miles in London and when we stopped in traffic he tapped on the passenger window and said 'that sounds awesome mate'. Lots of people love the RS3 and I dont plan to sell mine a for a while yet.

I wonder if people are expecting a price dip once the FL becomes properly available so they're getting rid while the prices are still decent

Is yours white? Mine is black with the black pack and it's pretty stealthy and so far it's gone under the radar.

Thanks very much for your input!

I agree on the monthly payments, they definitely aren't cheap haha.. anything the front side of £500 every month is questionable when you see it leaving the bank haha. Funilly enough, the RS insurance is £300+ cheaper than the S3, I assume thats exclusivity and less of them to be written off and stolen.

I told myself before, that the squealing brakes wouldn't bother me but my car squealed once pulling into work the other day, I can see that it might be a little embarrassing. But, most of these performance cars when you are talking supercars seem to suffer from brake squeal?

Definitely the S3 goes under the radar, I've had a few people compliment and quite a few turned heads but nothing like when I had the RS for a day. I had a boy in college today say "that is so peng", whatever that is supposed to mean haha.. that's the type of crowd I attract with the S3. I've not had anyone come up to me in a petrol station yet.
When I had the RS for a day, I had people in VXR's and alike totally fixated, one stopped me walking into McDonalds and said the car was stunning. Everybody looks, whether it's the noise or looks I'm not sure, noise probably. I had a guy say "that's a fast car" to his mate in the high street, people just know seeing the RS that it is a brutal car. It's always nice to hear approving comments of your car, I think.

I very much doubt they will, no facelift could give anybody a bad shine on any of the RS3's IMO.

My dad has an rs6 with a miltek non res, and that does sound awesome but I agree the 4.2 does sound slightly better, the only thing it's missing is the pops and bangs!

Yes definitely agree with you, the pops and bangs are fantastic. But, the 4.2 is a symphony and I can't think of a better noise to listen to.

Well Matthew , I don't think everybody sells up. There are some of us here for whom their RS3 is a 'keeper'... I think I am one of them.. however being petrol heads there is always the possibility that something else might come along.. At the moment I am luck enough to have a couple of Audis.. the RS3 is very special and I plan to keep for a long while.

It seems to be coincidence that I've seen a few examples of sales due to finances I think. House despises (I can understand that), but I've just seen a few with people saying if they keep it then it is going to cost them money? That's quoting. Other than servicing which is reasonable, I can't see why. Set of tyres £800, all adds up I suppose.

I think the RS3 is very reasonable to run. Sounds better than most V8's (quicker than most too!), but with fuel economy that is barely any worse than the 4cyl hot hatch brigade (unless downshifting in Dynamic mode!). Insurance is strangely cheap. Tyres aren't overly expensive. I can't comment on servicing yet, but doubt it'll be bank busting.

Yes mine is white with the full black pack including the pano roof and rails. There is a pic of it at the top of page 11 in the 'Post pics of your RS3 8V here' thread.

Going off of the service quotes I had today on the S3, it should be the same as any normal Audi. My S3 was quoted £155 oil change and £251 for a major/inspection service.

My Rs3 was quoted 272 plus vat for oil change.

Iv heard quotes from 150-360 some guys getting oil change for £100 supplying own oil all the dealers with in reach of me refuse to allow you to supply own oil.

Haggling gets local dealers in Scotland to around 250 inc vat pretty steep but RS tax yo

That's really not bad for a car with such exceptional performance! Even the stated 362hp cars getting close on 400, that is a serious power figure... I've not read one review that says the car is anything less than a straight line machine. Those who don't agree with the handling seem to be those who like to drive like unsophisticated hooligans ;)

I would be more than happy for Audi to use their oil, but I will check what it is first. They recommend and supply with the car Castrol Edge. But my supplying dealer uses 5W-30 Quantum oils across the board. Yes it meets the specification, but it is Quantum oil and not Castrol.. so we are mixing oil with the supplied top ups. I heard from the motor vehicles department in the college that Quantum is the budget oil to meet specification and therefore the dealers oil of choice.

I am going to use a different dealer to service, if they use Castrol I will let them supply it. I won't bother looking into any racing oils etc that some recommend, I would rather not create hassle if god forbid there was an engine warranty claim and Audi got picky.

Audi should supply 0w-30 Shell Helix AVL once they have used up all their castrol. Vw and Shell come up with it a good 2 years ago now and it is the recommended oil across most 2003 + cars

Now when I bought my A3 from Bedford Audi, it came with 0w-30 oil, my granddad bought his from Swindon and it came with 0w-30. We showed Audi the bottles, they were intrigued to see the bottles because they could not understand why on earth we got given a grade they have never seen / used because they use 5w-30.

Don't they change the plugs at a major service? And since the RS3 has 25% more plugs than the S3 and they aren't usually cheap, then it's going to cost more.

Plug change is every 19k afaik.

No, not every major service just at the set intervals. Air filters are between 40k and 60k, that's a long time for a paper filter.
