Ordered... S4 Avant

So after all of the final paperwork and bits and pieces I have collected my new S4. I'll write up my first thoughts later but as a very first impression WOW, and the dealer prep was very good - but they do know how picky I am. This is only the second S4 the dealer has delivered the first being on the 2nd December.

I'm sure your all keen to see some photos so here they are. One comment on the photos the interior is slightly darker in real life the photos make it look lighter than it really is.

It's being detailed on the 19th so more photos will follow then.

@Brasso - Stunning S4 Avant buddy !
Great write up too !
I'm assuming those are the S4 option only 19" wheels?
You didn't ask for advice but I'll give it anyway: Don't 'baby' the engine. Whilst I don't advocate thrashing a new engine, nor is taking it really easy for hundreds of miles a good idea either. Although apparently wearing in the piston rings happens quite quickly, I and many others subscribe to the so-called 'Motoman' method of break-in. That is once every journey find a piece of open road without traffic and accelerate up to around 5K in a low gear. Then use engine braking only to slow down as much as possible. You don't want to change gear so put the 'box in M. I haven't found anyone who used this method admit that their engine uses any oil.
+1 on this ^

Yes they are S4 only options. Really pleased I chose them.

I'll certainly not be driving like miss daisy, but won't be wringing it's neck for the first 1000km. Be half way through that tomorrow.

Cheers for the pics and write up @Brasso - great to hear that it all went well and that the car is awesome.

So glad you've said that the engine sounds nice and growly, that's a huge relief!

Looks good Brasso. Nice choice of wheels and interior.

I also picked mine up this morning. Will post a few pictures shortly. Its also Navarra blue, but with black interior and different 19" wheels.

Here we go, a few pictures of mine. Will try and get a few more tomorrow, including the interior which I've taken none of so far.

No TFSI badge on mine, and no badge delete specified, so not sure why others have one.

Very nice Fab, I do love the Navarra (even if I'm a bit bias now).

It was a tough choice for me on the wheels. I really like the ones you have gone for as well.

Gorgeous. Very similar handover room to @Brasso too. They're the wheels I went for. They do look good but yeah, the Navarra is brilliant. look forward to your thoughts and a little write up maybe after a proper drive?

I'll get some photos of the inside tomorrow, didn't take any at the dealer. Its got the standard aluminium inside, which I'm pretty pleased with, as it gives some contrast to what would otherwise be a completely black interior

Looking forward to it. The picture in daylight shows the colour off well.
I've gone all black so we will have another variation.

I'm scared. It really is 'red' Configurator makes it look much darker haha. Awck, it'll be fun. Awesome to see all these deliveries come through. It's been a grand couple of months keeping each other going

Prompted by Thundercliffe and following Brasso's lead, my first thoughts below...

Pleasant dealer experience. Free fill-up for me, with coffee and pastries for breakfast, which was a nice treat. A few of the dealership personnel came to have a chat and look at the car when in the delivery bay, as its the first S4 they've had in the showroom. Car was well prep'd by the dealer, with no marks or issues that I could see, despite looking very very hard to make sure it was perfect.

No freebies for me, beyond the USB cable for the phone, but no complaints as I'd squeezed them really hard on discount/trade-in and they'd already given a big discount on rubber mats/boot liner/mudflaps.

Colour is interesting in the flesh, which is difficult to capture in the the photos. Colour is very rich and depending on how the light catches it, seems to vary from very dark blues though much lighter blues when outside and under artificial lights seems to have some strong purple tones to it. That said, I'm delighted with the colour, especially when my last three cars have been the now standard grey/silver that most people seem to spec their cars with these days.

Tech inside is a very big step forward from my SQ5 and the B8 S4 before that. Will take some getting used to thats for sure and the comprehensive walk through from the salesman was very welcome indeed. Think i need to spend a few hours with the manual tomorrow and then have a play in the car.

Delighted with the B&O stereo, had it in both of my last audi's and its far better than the version in the SQ5. Just not sure how much I'll listen to it though - spent most of the journey home with all the windows/sunroof cracked open and the car in dynamic mode! Exhaust is much louder than I thought it would be in dynamic, but sounds great, if not exactly subtle (doubt the neighbours will like it as much as me though!)

Ride quality is pretty good (standard suspension). Definitely a big improvement on the SQ5 and better than I had expected it would be. Yes its reasonably firm, but well damped and doesn't crash through the poorer road surfaces we have up here, unlike the SQ5.

Seats are absolutely brilliant, was easy to find a very comfortable seating position and the adjustable side bolsters mean they really hold you in place. Even the massage function, which I still think might be a bit of novelty and rarely used, seems to be really good.

Really need to get a few miles under my belt now and see what its like on both a long drive and a more spirited one. Also very keen to see what the matrix lights are like. Will post more thoughts once I've done this.

Forgot to ask...

Has everybody got the TFSI badge removed? Heavens knows why they've added that to the rear. Dealer removing mine.

Am hoping mine doesn't come with the TFSI badge- will the dealer remove for you? @Brasso didn't have the badge on his but I've seen that some do! #confused

One of the guys at work has a black TTS with red leather and it looks fantastic. He had the same concerns as you and almost asked to change the order at one point, but is now pleased he didn't. Its undoubtedly a bold choice, but I'm sure its one that you'll be delighted with.

Excellent So glad to hear the exhaust is beefy. Is it really that loud? Reviews have said the S4 has been subdued but nothing like hearing in the flesh I bet. The tech just seems to be miles ahead of the B8/.5.

Its not excessively loud, but in dynamic mode generates a fair amount of noise (to my ears at least). Its definitely louder than my old B8 S4 was and when in dynamic, I definitely wouldn't describe it as subdued.

However, when you put it in auto or comfort mode, noise drops substantially and is not intrusive in the slightest.

I'm sure my neighbours will be happy although the wife's key will be mapped to comfort and mine will be mapped to dynamic!

Guys. For those that have traded in...how 'in-depth' was the inspection of the car you traded in please? Did your value remain or were you billed etc? I'm in PCP. Wondering if you guys are too?

Cheers. Getting the finance docs emailed tomorrow. It's the dealers first S4

Got a quick once over but then it was in pretty much mint condition.

Interesting the dealer tried to adjust the trade in and had the number been the one he quoted originally I'd have never changed. Needless to say when i pointed it out they soon fixed the problem.

Hmmmmm.

Mine is in really good condition but it had a knock this year and was repaired at Audi. Dealer said he'd 'track' my cars value going forward. That was 2 months ago. Obviously more mileage. But also more paid off at same time. Webuyanycar value hardly changed TBH. Just don't want any last minute surprises.

Similar to you before my credit check, they pulled out a monthly that was £20 over what we agreed. Fast conversation and I just presumed they were very busy and it's easy to forget a single clients' figures.

No attempt from my dealer to change the trade-in value or costs previously agreed. I was too busy having a look round the new car to see what he checked on the old car, but he was only gone for literally two minutes, so definitely wasn't an in-depth inspection. I assume they just had a quick look to see if there was any major damage/kerbed wheels etc.

One thing I've been curious to know is how you can customise the split view on the S mode Virtual Cockpit? With the regular cars you just tab left and right to pick what you want to see

Big help that buddy. Cheers Was gonna say, they're sending pre-agreed finance docs to sign tomorrow. I reckon front left alloy will be billed though. It is pretty bad in all fairness.

So after a decent drive today 340mile round trip what do I think.

Well the noise is great especially in dynamic. Ride on the standard suspension is great. Not too soft not too firm. The car us deceivingly quick. You don’t realise what speed your doing until you glance at the speedo. I had a couple of occurrences today where I had to really keep myself in check. The S3 seemed more aggressive some how in the way it delivered the speed. The S4 seems some how more grown up, understated fast I suppose.

Happy with the steering weight in both comfort and dynamic.

Need to have a bit more of a play with the stereo, only listened to a few tracks on the way out. Need to play a little more with the balance. Happy too with the quality of the sound though and still not disappointed having not optioned the B&O.

Coming back tonight the interior lighting is really great. Cabin is a lovely place to be. Seats are really comfortable, I only adjusted the seat once and did the round trip in complete comfort. Wife is loving the massage functions.

Light up cills are a nice touch.

Virtual cockpit is also fab, certainly need to have a bit more of a play with its settings and views.

The matrix lights were simply stunning. Much better than the led options I went for on the PFL s3.

Got 26.6 mpg going down and 29.9 coming back but then traffic was a lot heavier so much more time just cruising. For a first decent run though I was pleasantly surprised.

What kind of roads was that? I expect it will improve slightly as it gets some miles under it's wheels.

I'm interested in what mpg I'm likely to get on a long motorway, for the long runs to family or into France, etc.

Short journey's around town or when driven enthusiastically I'm fully prepared for low 20s, but on a long trip just cruising on the motorways it would be nice if it got anywhere near the quoted figures. Low 30s would be nice, any better would be great!

Thanks for the write ups. Looking forward to getting mine, although I'm still thinking I'll wait until March 1st if I can contain myself!

Mostly dual carriageway/ motorway. A bit of roundabout hopping along the a43. Didn't check my average speed but was doing 70 most the way home. There was a bit of stuck at 55 in traffic.
