Hi All

I'm looking at a greeting a new pressure washer. I've had about 5 Karcher K2's over the years and the latest one lasted just one use before dying!!! It seems the on/off switches on them are the trouble spot.

Are the more expensive Karcher models like the K4 any better for build quality? I see in them the warranty is 3 years as opposed to 1 year for the K2's!

K4's are £139 on Amazon at the moment.

Or is their better alternative brands?

My snow foam attachment is for Karcher though.

Thanks in advance.

Personally i'd go nilfisk over karcher. Similar options in terms of higher pressures and options to suit all budgets with the added benefit of using metal inner workings over plastic. I've got the c110 and it suits a car fine and i've certainly got no complaints. You can always get a nilfisk bayonnet attachment for the lance from autobrite or get the above with a new connector and lance for about 120 although you can get both for under a hundred with a bit of online seaching for the c110.

I have a 10 year old Karcher K3.97 but the new ones don't seem as well built. I'm with @TimM I'd be going Nilfisk.

Really?.....hmmm....I was just about to purchase the new Karcher K4 FULL CONTROL that's on offer in Argos at the moment for £139.99.

They are water cooled and meant to be better than the cheaper air cooled K2 models. I've heard of Nelfisk but haven't used them before.

3 year guarantee too

Your choice but like the look of the hose reel. I hate fighting the hose putting it away.

I've go the Nilsfik and it's much better than my older K2. Solid and more powerful.

Another +1 for the nilsfisk, i have the c110 and gives me a love thick foam similar to shaving foam with my snowfoam attachment

So far Karcher K4 has metal pump, water cooled and 3 year guarantee

v

Nilfisk metal pump, air cooled and 2 year guarantee

If you click the above it should have the 3 year guarantee but 40 quid cheaper. From recent feedback on detailing forums i'd go nilfisk but appreciate if you've only ever had karcher, it's perhaps difficult to drop the better the devil you know logic

I see that. Well my last Karcher lasted 1 use and packed in so I don't rate them really.
That nilfisk isn't as powerful but don't know if I would really notice the difference.

Don't bother with a Karcher K1 or K2 at all. The K3 and K4 range are much better. As stated above the Nilfsik wahers have good build quality.
I bought my Karcher from here

It was like new in the box complete with all the accessories. I have had it over 4 years now and it's still working well.
Nilfisk do refurbished items as well. This is a particularly good model and would blow a K3 / K4 Karcher into the weeds.

@desertstorm I see the Nilfisk and Karcher outlets are the SAME company!

I've bought from Karcher outlet before (K2 lasted 3 months and I had 2 hoses EXPLODE!). Might try Nilfisk this time. I do like that better model from the Nilfisk outlet. £10.99 for only 1 year warranty though isn't great!

I must be lucky, I've had a K2 for a good 18 months now and I hammer it every weekend. I do both our cars and if my Mother shows up at the right time, her's gets done as well. I also give the paving slabs a going over with the blaster lance every month or so.
The prices above for the Nilfisk would certainly have me thinking about one if I was in the market for a new machine, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it, is the way forward for me at the moment.
I also have a snowfoam lance with a Karcher fitting, but it wouldn't put me off changing brands, for all the price of a new bayonet.
There are some good deals out there at the mo.

Nobody has mentioned Kinzle, they are expensive but get rave reviews.

I have a nilfisk, uncertain of model number, it is my first pressure washer and 4 years plus in, it has never missed a beat.
One word of advise though, store it indoors, not really relevant this time of year, however when I researched before buying, it is frost and ice that kills these machines, so good practice is to store indoors and not in a cold shed or garage but somewhere warm

^this. In winter I tip mine forward to empty the last of the water as recommended by the manual. I then keep it near the centre of the garage which is frost free.

I'll vote for my K4.

Like you've mentioned it's water cooler so can runs for ages. Spent 2 hours constantly on doing the garden patio the other day, never missed a beat. So the cars are no problem. Pretty good power as well.

Like others have said its how you treat it, in the winter it lives in the spare bedroom, otherwise it's in the shed.

My only gripe is that it's on the heavy side. But it has wheels so not the biggest issue. and prefer it was heavy and quality than light and crap...

Another one here for nilfisk thought I'd try one after 3 karchers and can't fault it so far

+1 nilfisk. Had karcher before broke after 13months. Nilfisk 2yr warranty and loads loads better.

Another vote for Nilfisk. My E140 is great.

The Nilfisk is favourite so far. 4 Karchers in 4 years and 2 exploding hoses that nearly took my eye out tells a story of the awful Karcher build quality. My last Karcher lasted 1 use!!!

@Bristle Hound Yeah saw your post on DW mate!

Would the P150 be the best bet? £159.99 refurbished which is over Half original price but extended 1 year warranty is £10.99.
It has ALL metal internal parts so sounds like it would last longer.

It would it be over kill compared to the likes of the C130 from Argos? I'm just needing it for car washing.

Another vote here for Nilfisk and cleanstore.co.uk

Nilfisk use metal pumps, the cheaper Karcher's use plastic pumps. I've had 2 Karcher's and the plastic pumps went on both. I spoke to the guy at Karcher and he said it's cheaper to buy a new one than pay for the pump to be replaced!

This is the Nilfisk I have, the 10m hose is handy to get around all sides of the car without the need to keep moving the washer http://www.cleanstore.co.uk/products/product.asp?id=13384

Kranzle, King of pressure washers, fully repairable not like the other makes on the market.

Kranzles are very expensive though and for professional retailers and valeters. I couldn't justify one of those!
