That's an idea mate

Reading your latest thread Stuart made me wonder if you had run over a whole family of black cats in your S3 as if it weren't for bad luck it seems that you wouldn't have any luck at present with it.

I wonder if I should have paid a man from the RAC to tell me yes or no. Last time I did that in 1997 - I bought the car and the next day it didn't start and needed a new battery.

I think that tie bar had been snapped for ages but because people rarely go in the back it held its position - its only money and time. but I have been looking at a 5 door 2014 S3 down the road and wondered if I will end up spending that much.

Sorry Stuart, got locked out of the thread, you having been spreading you 'unlucky' dust on here have you :sadlike:

Hindsight is always 20/20 mate.We all find things after 'the event',I'm sure if I had mine checked before I bought it I may have walked away.At least we'll end up with a sorted car and one that we are sure is spot on,in time.

Chin up mate,

8v is indeed a fine car, only I think five doors are two too many, a bit too estate like if you know what I mean.

And I only found out this week that the S3 doors open wider than any other car I've owned :redface new:

Another part of the jigsaw completed today, the S3 was suffering from revving on gear change so I changed the clutch switch for a new one from Audi.
Can't really complain as it was the original one that had to be replaced...
DSC 0191

If this one lasts another 13 years it may 'see me out' :sadlike:

Did have a regression back to my school days as well(I had to polish my shoes everyday before school, damn you father!).

I gave my front seats a polish.

can I ask you whether this was an easy fix, my clutch switch is a doubtful item as pointed out by badger, basically between gear changes the revs don't drop immediately so I sound like a granny riding the clutch. there is a way of scanning it but I don't have a registered version of VCDS Lite yet.

it is just a matter of laying down in the foot well?

Compared to what you're currently doing Stuart, you could do this with your eyes closed. It's just a case of removing the driver's side lower dash panel, unplug the switch which is situated in front of the clutch pedal, twist the switch to pop it out of the holder and replace with a new one.

Another job done on your knees but you seem to be doing a lot of praying with your S3 recently,so should come naturally

This is the first car I have owned without a throttle cable and to me gear changes do seem a bit different to 'old skool' cars.

Hi. Can you please tell me what the latest revised part number is & how much it was? Thanks

Thanks - can I ask was your old switch visibly broken or is it something inside - I may as well do this when I fit a boost gauge as I need to get in and around that area when the car has four wheels on again.

No visible sign of it being broken mate,I just made an 'executive' decision to change it due to the revving.I haven't got round to ripping the old switch apart yet.

As I said before, gear changes are different with this car compared to older cars I've driven in the past,it may just be me but I think cable throttles shut off quicker than this 'fly by wire' one.I have had to change my driving style slightly (I'm 50 years old) and you sound to be a similar age mate (hopefully no offence caused :redface new:) so I lift off the throttle a fraction before engaging the clutch on spirited acceleration, hope that makes sense.

The part number of the clutch switch I got from Audi is... W6Q0 927 189 price - £15.75

I did take the part number of my old switch with me when ordering just for peace of mind...oh and due to my love of removing and refitting trim panels,of course.

yeah it is the same you are used to swapping up and down like the last 30 years of driving but with this I have to take my foot off about half a second before - I was wondering whether the clutch was cutting in too early even though the biting point is quite low. I will try a new clutch switch.

Thanks

These youngsters don't know how lucky they are

What with drum brakes,su carbs, points and manual chokes, nowadays they're 'living the dream'.

I actually think they are unlucky, because cars, petrol, tax and insurance is so expensive and cars are too fast and complicated. They missed out a lot, no all driving at 17 with a car you bought for £200 with £180 for insurance and buying 6 months tax the day before the MOT runs out, with someone who passed their test the day before sitting next to you, all wheel spinning around roundabouts in cortinas, escort mark 2, Morris Marina or "front wheel drive cars"
Learning the only way to overtake is to get a run up.
I loved my beige escort mark 2 1.1 popular with its vinyl seats and 1.3 block instead, driving to a scrapyard and climbing up 2 cars on top of each other to take off some exhaust sections for a fiver. Or changing an engine you got for £30 with some rope and an adult helping you use two people's shoulders as a crane to lower the engine in.

Oh well times change.

This week it's a case of 'The Good,The Bad and The Ugly...
...The Good was sourcing a Phatnoise box and DMS cartridge for just a few quid with the hope of putting it in the S3 if it was working :rolleyes new:
DSC 0205

A risk I thought was worth it,especially after stripping the hard drive from the DMS cartridge and plugging it into a caddy on my pc and getting the drive recognized and showing a load of music

The Bad...Ejected the drive and it just died on me,******.Anyone who has had experience of these will know that I now have a Phatnoise door stop in fair condition :sadlike: unless I can find someone who could hack my box and produce a hacked DMS (what I was hoping to do if I got it working).

Oh,and The Ugly...

...That's just me folks, take me as I am.

The game of Snakes and Ladders continues with my S3...just landed on another snake!

When I bought the car from a member on here in January I couldn't check the air con as the weather was too cold for it to function but because of my trusting nature I believed him when he assured me it was fully functional.

Yes you guessed it,tried the air con this week due to the brief warm spell were having in Oxford (sorry for all you up north snowed in) and it doesn't work :rage: so took it in for a check and the air con pump is knackered.

So now a few more hundred quid and the search for another pump begins.

I think this post tells me as much about myself as the guy I bought it from.

You really are having terrible luck and it's not fair. If it's a new pump you looking for try parts request system for a price. I really hope you get it sorted soon. You do have that big ball in the sky shining down on you and we have snow

Thats a bummer. Im sure you could source a mk4 platform air con pump second hand off facebook or ebay?

I'm sure I can mate, they're far too expensive new,in excess of £300.My mechanic has told me that the replacement pump can only be tested when it is fitted and under pressure from the system so need to make sure i get a good one :rolleyes new:

I have to agree, I had a Rover V8 P6 when I was eighteen, always being pulled up by the plod, asking why I had such a BIG car, then at nineteen I had a 3.0 litre S Capri, can you imagine the insurance on that today?

ayfreetee - was the 3.0s Capri always sideways (but uncontrollably because of its wheelbase)

tcg - sorry to hear about your aircon - there will always be something with these #moneypit S3's - maybe it was topped up incorrectly with eazyfreeze

Or maybe 'ayfreetee' :haha:

Yeah, I had going sideways down to a fine art, drifting long before there was such a thing as drifting, I had three 3.0 capris over a ten year period, wet roundabouts were great fun. :)

I drove a Yellow old S Reg one with a vinyl roof = 65 MPH in 2nd gear is an achievement, but they do usually take the second exit on roundabouts sideways instead of turning right :D

Only if you don't know how to drive them properly, balancing the throttle and the steering would give a a nice constant drift, many a time I'd go around roundabouts two or three times, just for the fun of it. :)

I never had a mk1 or 2 escort, I'd love one now, but they are silly money, when new, the 3.0 S Capri was the fasted car you could buy from ford and their chosen touring car competitor.

Bit quiet on the S3 front, just waiting for the air con parts to arrive and the car is booked in next week so hopefully we can all chill out then for a while.

Although not a direct S3 problem but related as one of its main priorities was to give my ageing dog a better space for travelling. We had a bad experience yesterday when I took him for a health check and he has heart/lung problems, he's had a stressful day today having an ultrasound on his heart, just waiting for the results :pensive:

On a positive note, after the scan at least I know he's not pregnant!

I am sorry to hear about your dog, I hope that sort something out for him.

Cheers Stuart,

He has minor valve problems on one side of his heart but the vet thinks it's his lungs that are the main cause of the problem. She's hoping it is a chest infection so he's on the antibiotics for a week and we'll see if he improves.

He does look a bit too metro-sexual with his shaved chest, he'll be on the catwalk next or the cover of Vogue :friendly wink:

How's your car progressing mate?

You seem to be having a torrid time of late.

Well lets hope the antibiotics do the trick.

you know the song "the knee bones connected to the..." that is my car. in order to fix the broken exhaust pipe, I am also changing head gasket, timing belt and water pump, dog bone engine mount, dipstick holder, downpipe and cat. all because the studs on the turbo are corroded and need to be removed (I bet they snap off)

I am changing oil and gearbox oil at the same time, I also may as well do the plugs, and we will see about the manifold when I drill off the last mani-turbo bolt. I am going to buy new rear springs and dampers - but need to get the front sorted first. will be removing the ill-fitting boost gauge I know when it is okay or not. just put back the sump plug and think I will get a second washer as it get so tight about 6lb then turns again.

I am hoping to get the head off today - then that will do for this weekend.

I will need to keep this car indefinitely as it will be mostly new by the end of it. I should have just bought some wheels and tyres and started from that.

I have most of the tools available for sale now too.

The phrase that pays today is......power steering pressure sensor.

I noticed it leaking when looking into the air-con problems so decided to cross that one of the list this week, you know that list that never ends!
DSC 0206

Easy job to do, just needed to unplug the sensor from the wiring loom plug then loosen with a 22mm spanner and of course once removed the fluid quickly drains out.

A bit of confusion entailed when I got the sensor from Audi as it had a different shaped plug (square) on it.

DSC 0205

Audi were convinced that was the right one so after me fretting over what else had been botched on my S3 by previous owners I removed my sensor and gave them the part number on it. It turns out there are two different sensors...

Square shape plug sensor - W6N0 919 081A
Half moon shape plug sensor - W1J0 919 081

For anybody who needs to change their sensor, hope that makes it clear, well a lot clearer than the power steering fluid that drained out when I did mine...
DSC 0207

Looked more like toilet waste water than power steering fluid :puke2:

I did flush my system a couple of times and got it to run out 'green' just like it came out of the bottle:flushed:
