So last Saturday, I P/X my old 1.4 122 S-Line A3 SB for a 1.4 150 COD S-Line A3 SB. Had a good offer from the dealer so went for it. Cracking engine.

Car now has 220 miles on it but I have noticed that while cruising on the motorway at 70, the car feels like it is surging. It doesn't feel smooth, like my old 122. I don't know whether it's just the engine being more responsive or because it's new? I looked to see if it corresponded to when the 2-cylinder mode kicks in but no. It appears to slightly jerky in and out of 2-cylinder mode. Even changed the engine from comfort to dynamic, but it was the same.

Has anyone with a COD engine had a similar issue? I've searched but cannot find anybody with a similar issue.

Thanks

Hi Pintman,

Sounds very unusual to me! Are you using standard octane unleaded? Have you tried switching to efficiency mode to see if that makes a difference? I think I am in a minority of one in driving in efficiency mode but it works well for me and I drop the gearbox into S mode if I need a burst of power.

Hope you get it sorted.

Andrew

No, I have not seen anything like this. And switching between 2 and 4 cylinder mode is completely transparent. You just can't tell.

Agreed my car shows no signs of which mode it's in very smooth.

Thanks, no have to say that I haven't tried efficiency mode yet. I'll try it in the morning and see. Both Dynamic and conform, I feel this slight jarring, surging.

They filled up the tank with Shell when I got the car. I'd be surprised if there is any crud in the system. I have been driving a little caustically due to being new. Maybe I need to drive a bit more spiritedly. :grinning:

Oh, it's a manual.

Perhaps the extra power is taking some getting used to

That was one of my thoughts. I think I may have got used to the 122, had that for 2yrs. You can definitely feel the difference, more noticeable in 6th, with the 150.

I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes. Probably me being too paranoid.

Its highly unlikely to be be the switching between cyl modes at those speeds, mine has never done this at all. I do suspect it is down to the driving style but be careful what you say otherwise the cod vibration police will arrive ;-)

Lol, doesn't feel like vibration, more of a very subtle jerking/ surging effect. Bit strange but drive isn't smooth.

I'll mention it to the stealer when I go to get the headlight alignment sorted (too high!)

If you have cruise control, does it do it with the human taken out of the loop? Either way I'd get them to do a diagnostic on it, the 1.4COD engines are known for their smoothness.

Re - the eco mode. I really didn't like it when I tried. It was the coasting that gave a wierd feeling - the lack of engine braking. But maybe that would be different with a manual - does eco didengage the clutch on overrun?

Drove the car this morning in efficiency mode and didn't notice it. However, changing to comfort, I noticed that this surging is when 2-cylinder goes back to 4-cylinder. Hard to describe but 65mph, car goes into 2-cylinder mode. Bit of acceleration say up to 70mph and the initial surge is when it goes out.

Probably the nature of the beast and something I'll have to get used to.

I don't think you have to get used to it. It shouldn't do this - certainly mine doesn't.

OK, I'll definitely mention it to the dealer then, now I've narrowed it down a bit. See what they say.

Off topic (sorry) - Andrew..any pics on here of your motor?

On topic:..agree ....the transition from 2-4-2-4-2 and so on is seamless..if you try really hard you can feel it but 99% of driving it's undetectable....I drove the 122 and then ordered the COD....the COD feels the same but more urgent (IMO)...there is no surg-ING ..just smooth acceleration...

If you think it's unusual then it most probably is...and a quick 'surge' to the dealer would be wise....don't leave it with them though...drag one into the car for a quick spin!

The problem is I don't know others, in the passenger seat, can feel it or not. I'll get the Mrs to drive it tomorrow for her opinion.

She thinks I am paranoid about everything related to the car, but I'll get her thoughts anyway.

I see it that when you are spending £'s on a car, you want it to be perfect, not just OK! :grinning:

Indeed..maybe someone on here who is local could do a 2 minute car swap?(gulp)...I'd ask one of Audi mechanics to take it for a spin whilst you are pressing the imaginary brake in the passenger seat...

The only time I get any sort of a surging sensation is going uphill and the car changes down a gear (it's a DSG).

Mine is seamless when changing between 2 and 4 really smooth, have you tried changing the digital dash display, as it tells you when it is on 2 cylinder mode.
I can confirm that sitting at 70mph with cruise control on it does sit in 2 cylinder mode,

That's how I managed to realise that it was the transition from 2 to 4 that gives this surging effect. It may be just me not being used to it, but I've asked the dealer to have a look at it.

Ok thanks, my car does not do what you describe, not one bit...

Maybe it's just me!!

The Mrs drove my car today and couldn't feel anything wrong with it; said it was smoother than her '65 Juke Tekna Dci. I didn't say anything!

Might just see how it goes. Got 3yrs warranty I suppose. :grinning:

I would hope the audi is smoother than the juke, petrol versus a diesel - no contest plus the fact the juke is plain ugly...
