Damn it.... Macclesfield Audi did my service... I told them twice on the phone and the wife told them when she dropped it off yet they still cleaned it.
I'm just annoyed that they can't organise something as simple as NOT cleaning a car! Its much easier to NOT clean a car than it is to clean it...surely?
I haven't really checked it with any special lighting but my iPhone flashlight shows up tiny swirls! I haven't called them up cos its a bit too late now...just annoying.

There should be a big sign that can be put on the inside of the windscreen that says do not clean my car.

I always print a sheet off in big letters "DO NOT WASH CAR" and stick it to the instrument cluster.

I feel your pain though, I always get odd looks when I ask them not to wash it

First thing in the morning you need to be speaking to the Service Manager & asking for a Pro-Detail to sort this issue out

You need these in your life the next time your car is in the Dealers -

Yeah, the couple of times I've asked VW not to wash the Golf I've got the same look. First time I'd waited with it so it escaped the wash, the second time left it with them and it got washed anyway.
After that I realised the "damage" wasn't that bad and could easily be sorted, so just leave them to it now. Not worth the stress.

Nottingham Audi did that to me once...

TL;DR they messed my stock 18" wheels and they ended up replacing them with brand new 19" ones from Germany :)

Make them pay for there sins!

Don't know if I've got the balls to complain :(
What's the worst that can happen?

They say no.

Then you carry your day on like normal

If you get the follow up 'How did we do?' questionnaire , you'll have the opportunity to say that you were not completely satisfied. That seems to be the worst thing you can say as it impacts in some way on the service adviser's brownie points.

Am always amazed by these type of threads.
It's a car - really, don't worry about it !!

Saying that mind, I suppose each of us has our troubles to bear - I'd gladly swap any of mine for this particular "worry" though.

Yes it is a car...
However to some it's a hobby, a pride and joy, an item which can give great satisfaction and pleasure, a considerable investment (especially if you pay for it yourself).
Like some are house proud, if you're like me then I'm car proud, I enjoy having my car looking as new and find a perverse pleasure in keeping it looking nice.

So to take what is your pride and joy to a main dealer and get it returned with what I would cause unnecessary damage on it then that's just down right unacceptable.
If it was me I'd be wanting the swirls removed and not by the cowboys in their paint shop, although some are better than others.

I'm ok with others who feel it's 'just a car' with swirls and dirt, scratches and muck with scuffed wheels and crisp packets inside. So allow me my hobby too.

I left this on the dash and one on the passenger seat, it seemed to have done the trick ....

I fully understand if you're like that but after spending hours and hours making sure I don't mark my car when I'm cleaning it someone else doing it through not understanding how to correctly wash a car would annoy me. Especially that you're looking at £300 odd to have it fixed and there is only so many times it can be fixed, you only have so much clear coat to cut back

Just picked my car up from Portsmouth Audi after they carried out the first oil change and inspection service, before which, I asked them not to wash the car and, I'm pleased to say, they didn't! I mentioned this to the service advisor, and he told me that, whilst it was their standard practice to wash the cars after a service, they are now being requested not to wash cars by many of their customers, which they have no problem with.

your iPhone light shows tiny swirls? which you can guarantee weren't there before hand?
you're that "into detailing" you lack the basic equipment to rectify the issue?

it seems a lot to complain about, when "swirls" will appear from day to day driving, good OR bad wash technique, even being stood up in poor weather.

then again, if you can 100% point it to being their "valet" which has caused it...go kick up f***

Wow...I can't believe what a reaction this has received!

Like I said, I can't be sure that they have made the swirls...I'm not even sure that there are any significant patches(I did see a little though)

I was more annoyed that they had cleaned it after being told three times. I got home from work, as the wife had taken it in, and it was washed. I can't possibly prove that any imperfections weren't there before. I can't even prove that they used sponges cos the clean was really crap anyway, still dirty patches and water marks all over. They could have just jet washed it.
I've been at work during daylight hours so I still haven't seen it in any good light.
My mate is round at the moment and we will get the torches out later.

I'm not gonna ring up audi though, but I like the comment about mentioning it in any "questionnaire" that they send me.

I guess I just gotta put it down to experience. I will definitely print some of those signs out.

I've never cleaned my own car before this one. Always had older cars and just never bothered but I've been really going to town on the S3. I bought all the equipment and chemicals and I have even been doing 'touch less' washes during the winter months. Then they go and spoil all my hard work and will power not to take it to a car wash. Grrrrrr! :(

there has been a spike in dealers cleaning cars / slander this week.
no harm will come from one dealer quick and poor wash technique.

I use the best light - sunlight lol!

Fair point about swirls appearing over time - had to DA the front of my car last week after seeing the hologram reflections in the sun and I've only ever washed mine using the two bucket method. Think it's pretty unavoidable really and can be easily sorted every 6 - 12 months with a good home detail.

I had a similar issue at Audi in Macc. I complained about it in the feedback survey, and my comments seem to have been completely ignored so these surveys are a waste of time (unless they get good feedback I guess which I'm sure they publicise). Call me cynical maybe.

i aim for one full blown detail once a year! There is no need to over do it, but also doing it more than that will give me less to work with and in my opinion, final results don't look so good. I've got a good bunch of battle wounds on the S3 now, so i can't wait to get on with it.

whilst they may not have taken note of your survey, you'll find that their customer service % would decrease. All main dealers aim to achieve a set % of happy customers from the surveys. In my dealership, if we don't score the set % that month, we don't benefit, if we hit it or exceed i get an extra £200 in my paycheque. for not really doing much, other than my job. (along side basic salary and other workshop bonus and personal bonus)

Swirls do NOT appear from day to day use, straight scratches, stone chips and car park dents occur from day to day use.
A swirl is caused by mechanical contact nothing else, the shape of the swirls replicate the travel of something rubbing an abrasive element on the paintwork.

My car is just over 18 months old with NO swirls on the paintwork, it has never been polished, I have a DA machine and all the gear just sitting waiting for when I do need to remove some.

I would at least talk to the dealer about it and point out the ****** job they did do......

I would call the dealer to complain and at least ask how it was washed. Yes, you might not be able to prove that they caused the swirls but, if you have noticed these since collecting the car that you had recently washed (and I'm guessing you didn't notice any swirls when you washed it) then I would complain anyway... Swirls or not you asked them not to wash it!!

They may even pay to have it rectified for the fear of a lost customer.

18 months old and not a single swirl? i take it theres no orange peel either?
must be one of the select zero, when the paint can come flawless from the factory!

never driven in hail
never driven down a country lane with bushes either side
never walked past the car and top rubbed it every so minutely
never had bird s**t on it and had to get it off
never had the neighbours cat walk on it

i'd love to see your car under real light! id have paid extra when i bought any of my vehicles if they came with a swirl free finish!

I have to agree Steeve, from my time spent on the Detailing World forum and Google, paint swirls are 99% (I won't say 100%) of the time caused by improper washing techniques. Most day to day things that come in contact with the paint don't swirl around.
All those things you listed will/can scratch paint but it's highly unlikely to swirl around on the paint work.
