Hi audi-sport i have an 07plate 2.0L 170 tdi S line, ever since ive had it its had a cold start issue ive had a new battery and starter but still not much better, the best way to describe it is its like the fuel is draining back to the tank when its sat? like the longer its left the worse it is, once it fires it takes a second for the revs to get to idle then its fine, and fine for the rest of the day, its only ever the first start of the day? i've read somewhere it could be the high pressure pump on the engine? its throwing no fault codes either, my local specialist had it over the weekend and started it first thing monday morning and agreed about the problem but obviously then its fine annoying. Anyone had this?

Cheers Karl

Could be worth checking the glow plugs.

I had this issue on my 170, wasn't resolved until I changed the glow plugs.

cheers buddy think i'll chuck a set in, they were changed last year, i'm not convinced this is the problem though as its sluggish to get to idle once its fired, but worth a try :)

Fuel filter under bonnet. Check connection and/or replace.
Perhaps one of the many temp sensors is intermitant.

Yeah defo worth a try. If it still persists I read while researching my issue that it can also be caused by the high pressure pump.

yeah i read high pressure pump, think i'll do all three of these things then ie: pump, filter, plugs

any links to a how to for the high pressure pump replace, how do you bleed the system?

I had a very similar problem with my last car, an 8p 2.0 tdi 140.

I have a sloped driveway and it was always most evident when I reversed on the drive so nose was facing up.
Didn't really have the problem when nose down.

It was almost like the fuel was completely draining out the engine back to the tank when parked and the pumps struggled to effectively prime the engine before starting. Never failed to start, just took longer on some mornings

this is exactly how mine is! annoying!! is there a non return valve anywhere in the system? someone must of had this and solved the problem? anyone? prize for the correct solution ;)

There is no valve installed by default. You can buy one from a parts store. I'll do this for my car in a few days and I hope that will solve the problem. Thi would be a cheap fix.

Same issue, the lift pump in the tank fails, it's common, if you sit there and switch the ignition on and off and you find it solves the issue, there's a fuel non return valve built into the lift pump which can stick open, if you find it doesn't help, then it could be the pump itself, eventually the tandem pump will drag the fuel through if the battery lasts that long. I find my car will start all day every day but if it sits for a couple of days in the cold it's like I've run out of diesel and it kills the battery trying to get some. I'm going to try an inline non return valve before the fuel filter and see if that solves it, if not it looks like best part of £300 for a pump and garage time.

Just noticed this and thought I would jump on with my issue

I have a 3.2 petrol and when my cars been sat overnight and I start it just as the idle is dropping to settle it sometimes the car starts to splutter and try to stall the revs bounce and drop are irratic a few revs of the pedal it's fine but when the rev counter drops it gets irratic again the engine sounds like it's being starved of something. It never stalls and as soon as I get on the road it's fine and doesn't do it again that day. This does not happen all the time it's intermittent I've done the battery and the maf and thought the problem was solved but it done it again the other day. I don't think it's weather related as it was -1 all day today and it never happened at all started and settled no issue. I've checked connections and all ok. ?

I don't think mine's weather related but it did begin as the weather got colder, I suspect it's a coincidence, just a bad lift pump

Funeley enough this only started when the weather got cold for me too which was about 2 months ago it's never happened before in the 4 years I've had the car

Unless of course the low temperature is affecting the pump or valve, but if that's the case the thing is faulty anyway, I've been reading about this same issue on other forums, it's very common, lift pump failures seem to start from about 45k miles, I don't see why audi have not done anything to address it.

Just a thought, diesel is an oil, oil does get thicker in cold temperatures and this may have an effect on a tired pump or valve

Well looks like I've been barking up the wrong tree, really tempted to kick it today! wouldn't start again, cranked it and cranked it, eventually it fired up like a dumper truck, idled for about 5 mins while I strapped little un in and waited for er indoors, well off we went, got to the junction at the end of the street about 100yds and it died!!!! would not restart, I pushed it back to the house, called my friendly garage and waited, I put the battery on charge while I waited then the guy turned up and hooked up his laptop, he got the car to start eventually and then told me I had one totally knackered injector and one pretty bad one, that'll explain the rough idle too then I suppose, anyway I called the local stealership and said I'm not happy about 2 injectors failing at just 91k, well the guy agreed and gave me a quote for £1500 and 14p! He also gave me head office's number and I'm currently awaiting a call back from them. I called the local parts supplier and they want £500 plus vat each for the injectors and apparently you cant touch them with your fingers, so I think it's going to have to be transported 11 miles to Audi, hopefully they'll help with the cost, Maybe I should have bought a BMW!

result, just got my car back from Audi, turns out the injectors were reading wrong due to low fuel pressure, the pressure provided by the tandem pump is supposed to be 10.5 bar, mine was a fluctuating 8 bar at 4000 rpm and just about zero on crank, they replaced the tandem pump and all is well, about £550 all in,
