New section for me this 1 so I'll start with a Hello!!

Ive had a B6 s4 for 8 years now and loved every minute of it, just feel its time for a change to something more modern.

I'm off too view a B8.5 S4 on friday and know nothing about them other than that I like the look of them and the tuning potential looks immense!

Is there anything I should be looking/listening for?

What are the problems people have been having?

Ryan

I've only had mine three months since new, so no issues to report on. Earlier models could have gearbox problems, as others can report on in more detail. One thing I would say is, that you talk of the S4 being tunable. The latest models with the CREC engine code are not, as yet, tunable like previous versions.

If you want to tune it then at the moment you want to be looking at the MY12/13 cars I think. Should be late enough for no gearbox issues but still with an ECU that has been cracked.

Bottom line is do it! I'm loving mine.

Hello @RyanJonS4, welcome to the section!
Had my S4 just over a year, no majory problems as yet.
Back in 2004 I had a B6 S4 and loved it so got back in an S4 when funds permitted.
The supercharged V6 is awesome and has bags of potential to unlock if you brave enough.
Anything before MY2015 (Build week 22, June 2015 ish) is currently tuneable

Go stage 2, hold on and grin a lot!
Pay a bit more and get from an Audi dealer if getting the stronic, otherwise manual is a safer bet. Great cars when going right but mines had about £7k spent on it in a year of ownership (not including services etc)
Earlier 8.5 versions are a safer bet than 2009 ones

Gearbox is the main thing to check as others have said. Had mine from new since June 2014. Nothing major cropped up. List is:

- coolant level dropped for a while then settled
- minor rattle from rear door fixed under warranty (window regulator adjusted)
- panel in boot came loose, fixed under warranty (new panel fitted)

That's it. My ramblings are here:

@Bristle Hound @jdp1962 have similar epic threads to read. Just use the search box (Luke). :)

Any questions, just ask!

Cheers guys

The 1 I'm going viewing is a 2012 with dsg, is this the era that suffers badly with the gear box issues?

Keef- How does your 8 compare to your 6?

Razza1- Thats a fair amount, what has it had done?

Ryan

Mech unit replaced due to clunky changes and limp mode happening £3.6k, didn't fix the issue so a rebuild needed including clutches replaced £2.4k, thermostat £400 (would have been £900!! If Audi did it), £200 for a rear door lock, suspension/headlight level sensor £100, software update for gearbox £100, parking solenoid £100 ish plus a load on diagnosis. Warranty covered about £3.5k of it all....

Don't get the wrong idea - there is no epidemic of gearbox issues. The internet being what it is, there are reports from owners who have problems and these get the focus giving the impression that the situation is worse than it is. You could check out this thread on Audizine which implies that B8 owners were more likely to have gearbox problems than B8.5 owners. Certainly in my reading across sites, whenever someone is reporting a gearbox problem it is typically on an 09 or 10 car. I can remember a mere few for 11 or 12 cars. I saw a report from a US owner having a problem on a 13 car, however in the US they generally refer to MY so that was likely a car built in 2012.

I've only gone and bought it!

Pick it up Monday hopefully as long as its properly prepared by then.

The car is absolutely immaculate and pretty well speced, cant wait for Monday now.

Also just purchased an ecs tuning induction kit and booked in with infinity exhausts for 2 weeks on Tuesday

Looks like a very high spec car Ryan! Nice choice, you will love it I'm sure. :)

Nice car, great spec, enjoy. Good to see that S4 values are holding up well, bodes well for next year when mine gets traded in (if the boss lets me!)
