Hi all,
New to the forum having placed my order for a new S4 Avant on 3 June. I'd been looking at 3/4 year old examples but when I read about model run-out discounts available on new cars through Car Wow I thought I'd check it out. I was offered a stock vehicle from a local dealer and was prepared to go for it, but when another dealer gave me an even lower price for a factory order it was too good to turn down!

I've been given a build week 28, due to arrive in the showroom in August so i will probably hang on for the next 65 plate. I'm pretty excited to say the least!

Here's the spec:

S4 Avant Black Edition Nav
Mythos Black
Standard seats - black/lunar silver
Open sky panoramic sunroof
Storage pack
High-beam assist
Mobile phone prep High with Audi Connect

I'm changing up from a 2009 Mk 6 Golf GTI which has been a fantastic car, but with a family and kitesurfing for a hobby, I needed a fast and practical estate :)

cheers,

Martin

Hi Cam & welcome to the club!
Lovely spec there mate, the wait pain is harsh but only intensifies your enjoyment of the orchestral farts from your new quad exhaust system!!:yahoo:

BTW Thank goodness you ordered black, makes a nice change on this forum, but then I'm sure black was your second choice after Sepang when you heard the sad news of the world wide shortage of '#teamsepang' due to recent high levels of demand particularly in England?!
(*Ahem*)

Seriously…Welcome!!

Hello Cam
Great choice, Welcome!
You've done well to secure a build slot

Welcome - Mythos Black is that some sort of dark version of Sepang?

All the best

Ha ha, actually Sepang was my first choice but the wife wasn't a fan and so I was overruled! To be honest, I was still pinching myself she had agreed to the whole idea in the first place (she wanted a Q3) and so the S4 might as well have been pink for all I cared :)

Great choice Martin. Had mine 6 months now. There is always a little sense of occasion when your in these things. Enjoy.

Well things are moving faster than I expected. Having been given a build week in early July, according to the online tracker my car is already in the UK on its way to the dealer!

Sweaty palms time Cam, it'll look the business - I was struggling to keep my composure when 'the eagle had landed' & was frankly good for nothing except being like an overexcited child:) - looking forward to some pics!

Had a call from the dealer yesterday to says it's arrived! I need to sell mine first for the deposit, so plan is to collect it on 1 September, if I can wait that long!...

So, a month into S4 Avant ownership and more than 1000 miles covered I thought a review and first impressions was in order.

My car had arrived in the dealers in late July but I managed to resist collecting it for a few weeks and having sold my previous car privately I was straight in to the dealers on 1 September on new registration day. Collecting the car from the dealership I drove the 50 miles home nice and steady, just wanting to get home in one piece.

Within a few days the S4 was thrown into action with a long trip to Devon, fully laden with wife and two children and holiday gear. A steady 75mph cruise most of the way for the 240-mile journey saw the car return just a shade under 30mpg when I filled the tank upon arrival – pleasant surprise number one.

I did around 700 miles in that first week alone and it did the motorway cruising stuff excellently, as well as providing the odd opportunity to explore the performance a little on the A roads and rural roads in Devon.

A few weeks in and I’ve finally been able to get some time to myself to drive it in the different gearbox modes. In automatic it’s great around town and at low speeds but then it gathers pace very quickly and with very little fuss. Switching from a 2-litre 4-cylinder into the S4 the noise from the engine is noticeably different – it’s subtle but has a nice low rumble to it It’s an effortless cruiser and will do that all day long if you ask it to.

And then there’s the other side to the S4’s character, because driving it in Sport mode it’s a very different animal. With the increased throttle response, noise and surge in acceleration it’s easy to forget there’s an estate body over your shoulder. Taking a mate out for a drive I experienced the boom you get from the exhausts on full-bore upshifts which sound pretty epic. Blips on downshifts also sound pretty cool and the thing just grips and grips round roundabouts with no discernible body roll. I can take corners much faster and with more confidence than I ever could in my GTI.

Interior-wise I went for the standard alcantara and leather seats with the silver centres which I thought would be a nice contrast to the black paintwork. The money saved from not ordering the Supersports seats I spent on the panoramic roof which is a more unusual option and one I have no regrets over – it gives a great ambience inside and the kids love it.

On the outside I’m really pleased I went for the Mythos black. Being the black edition with the window tints it’s really rather black and looks quite brooding and purposeful. Again, love the contrast between the black paint and the silver mirror caps. The paintwork looked stunning when I collected it but it’s been six weeks now and it’s only just been introduced to a car sponge for the first time (apologies detailers). As much as I like to have a clean car, with a young family I don’t have the time or inclination to stress about it too much. What did raise my blood pressure though was the fact it took only seven days to collect the first car park ding. It wasn’t even a tight space but somehow someone managed to open their door into my rear door near the handle, causing a small dent about the size of a little finger nail. I’ve also got a nice stone chip on the bonnet edge which shows up much more than it ever would have done on my silver car.

Anyway, I could go on but as you can probably guess I’m over the moon with my purchase so far and look forward to enjoying S4 ownership to the full as time goes on!

Thought I'd share a few pics including some interior shots showing the pano roof.

Looks great Cam. I have not had a black car, daytona is the darkest I've ever had. This is because of the long hot summer we have. I would usually have something like glacier or lighter silvers. But I think these wagons look absolutely great in the darker colours. The black looks stunning. The little contrasts like the mirrors look way cool. Sorry to hear about your little ding. Nothing worse, that one gets right up my nose. Stone chip? Annoying but part of it eh. Looks great. PS I had a clear vinyl wrap of my bonnet to protect against chips. Wouldn't know its there.

My first black car and right decision despite the difficulties keeping it clean. Giving it a quick wash like I used to with my old silver car is akin to just moving the dirt around a bit...

Haha a good chamois pre xmas? Apart from these big cleans etc a quick hose and a good chamois goes a long way to keeping them looking good I recon. And clean wheels. Akebonos sorts that out. Just had a look at your photos again. It's a good looking car.

I'm not having another black one. Looks awesome when clean but lasts 5 minutes. :) I assumed as an amateur detailer I'd be OK but no. Life's just too short for black. Well if you have the OCD eye that is.

Whoops...... me thinks I've said the wrong thing re a chamois. Haha.... I had a look at the detailing forum and yes I'm about a century behind. My trusty old Autoglym chamois just keeps on giving. Its old, and as soft as a babies butt. It lives in its little plastic thing with the spare and is a bit spoilt these days because I use Maguires lush golden detergent. My mates at work think I'm going soft/snobby because I don't, or won't, use the truck tractor wash detergent we have at work on my Audi. Go on Cam ask Santa for a chamois. I dare ya.

@chucky1 I asked the dealer not to prep my car when it was new. I also have a "don't wash this car" sign for servicing time.

I love it. Get into it boys. My car's kept pretty clean. I'm just not up with all this stuff you guys use. I have a wash bay at work where I do my car. This is pure looxury. As I said, the guys are always taking the p... about me using my "special" detergent and not using the truck wash. I use a soft cloth ie a pillow slip and not one of the brooms which in their minds takes longer. We use softish brooms to do the ambulances. Then its regularly polished at home with Autoglym. The hose and chamois does the trick to me when it doesn't quite need a wash. I know this is sacrilege to you guys. Looks good Jetty. And Cam, haha get a chamois for xmas.

Black's rewarding after an annual machine detail of various grades and double checked for scratches/swirls with a halogen sun lamp.
You just need to make sure it's well waxed and sealed and kept topped up with a good quick detailer or carnauba detailer. This makes drying easier and less sticky for dirt.
I thought that Sepang blue would show the dirt, but it seems quite forgiving.
