Hi all,

The other day I started the car, and I noticed that the there was an unusual tone to the car, like whine of sorts.
I noticed that when I would rev the car it would the whine would increase, I then turned the steering and noticed it did it then too. Car pulls well turns fine. Whilst driving cant hear the whine sounds normal, mainly at low revs or stationary.

Just wondering could this be a Power Steering pump issue? any ideas is it common fault.

Before this the car has been running perfect.

Thanks in advance!!!

Check your power steering fluid level. My A4 was noisy unless the fluid is on the X of MAX. Anything below, it seem to be noisy.
or
Aircon pulley. They're not a solid unit, they freewheel one way and catch the other. They dry out and go wrong.
Done a couple on cars now.

Ok I have checked fluid level is super low well below the dipstick level so the dipstick Is dry

Can I drive the car to the a halfrauds about 2 mile away like this?

Yep providing there is some fluid in the reservoir, have a good look around because its a sealed system so you must have a leak somewhere. If there's no fluid in reservoir DONT drive it.

What's your wife doing under the bonnet lol

Strange that cuz all the ones I've ever done had normal PSF in them , done diesels and petrols and never seen green in any?

A4's use green mineral oil. Use red or synthetic to ensure it blows a seal.

I'm not doubting you just saying I've been doing Audi's for years and never seen green in any nor a blown seal,I've used red in all mine and never had a problem maybe I'm lucky?

Or maybe its b/s spread by internet mechanics, the only difference is the oils reaction to cold temperatures basically the GI rating of the green is higher so if you live in a climate which has temperatures lower than -35° then you need green if not then red is fine.

Actually Halfords, don't sell the official VW/Audi G 002 000, how ever the did have this in store, Comma MVCHF (Central Hydraulic Fluid), I pulled up the data sheet for this online http://www.commaoil.com/productsguide/file/49f51544856aa48452417bc304b53270 and this is recommended for applications requiring VW/Audi G 002 000 mineral oil. The fluid is Synthetic and green in colour. The AA guy came and checked with him, he said is ok and I topped it up. I've been driving for 2 months and it been fine. I need to get the loss of PS fluid to be checked and the system flushed. But this product is held in stock by Halfrauds.

Interesting but I would get the real stuff which isn't dear. You might find it holds cos I found mine at the min 2yrs ago and it hasn't needed any more since

Silly question but here goes: How to check level? engine off or on? Also dipstick reading when cap fully tightened or just placed on top of reservoir? Have looked in manual but not specific.
Had Mitsus and VW and Pugs which i feel say engine running but .....
