having problems with the mmi any help greatly appreciated!!

If using the NAV connector works then there must be something wrong with the fibre loop. I wonder if someone has altered the in-outs of the connectors in order to make something work.

I'm a bit late to this - I have MMI 2G high with DAB - my first port of call would be to get a diagnostic check with VCDS as mentioned above. It will show any faults with the hardware but there is also a tool that will check the fibre optic cables between each module in the car so that you can be sure that they're not the culprit. You can also check the coding of each module - if there has been any modification and the car hasn't been told about it, there will be problems.

For reference, the latest (and final) version of the MMI 2G software is 5.5.7.0, most people call it 5570. You can easily upgrade it yourself, depending on your techy-ness!

@benjie thank you I would like to get a vcds in there and this tool to check the fibre cables just to rule out any problems there I'm also going to try the navigation fibre in the radio unit to see what that does tomorrow I personally think that it is the Becker radio unit that may be faulty and could do with something as I believe my system is running 5.1.7.0 software I would like to try the update to the most recent one or something along those lines to at least stop the constant crashing I can live without the radio till I know fully where the problem lies and what to replace re-programme etc I plan for the near future to have dab after some new alloys of course

Personally I would wait till everything is working before you start flashing firmware. Last think you want is a module only flashing half way, dying because of an underlying issue as mean you may need to spend £££ to replace. I'm running 5170 on mine with no issues.

There is definitely something amiss as there is no reason for the ring adapter unless someone has modified the fibre route. If the radio is fine my money is on wrong coding or broken fibre network.

Well my fist port of call today is to try the fibre cable from the nav then report back to you guys with the outcome of it and see where we go from there :sos:

Okie dokie here I go I have disconnected the nav fiber and connected it to the Becker unit and still nothing I also tried the power from the nav just incase it could have been as simple as a power issue as I noticed when I removed the fiber from the nav there was a red light emitted from the nav player ( the signal I assume) and not one from the radio units fiber connection hence trying the power aswell both the radio and the nav fiber cables taped yellow and blue on previous photos emit the red light (the signal) from them from the same side of the fiber cables connectors two sockets (tongue twister) but with it connected from the nav unit both power and fiber cable and just fiber cable and radio power there is no action on the dash from the mmi system.:notworking:

If there is no light from the fibre port using the Nav's power then the radio is obviously fubarred! It would still be worth a VCDS scan to be 100%. I would potentially guess the previous owner had an OEM DAB tuner or Fistune which they have disconnected and sold.
The reason the MMI is crashing is probably because the radio is still coded in to the car.

I think your quite right there so would that mean a new radio unit or can It just be replaced with the dab kit or does that need the radio unit to work ?

And a Vcds would probably narrow down the problem further with regards to the crashing

Not 100% sure if it'll work without the radio. I would be surprised if you can turn it off as it was never an optional extra that could be added. Unfortunately a new radio will involve a trip to Audi to remove Component Protection. There is no way round this and only a main dealer can do it which leads on to your next question. There's certainly no shortage of radios on eBay tho.

Yes plus if it's something else, you havent wasted the money replacing the radio and an hours labour at dealer. I am 99.9% the lack of radio is causing it as it will be coded in but could be something else like damaged fibre cables given someone has messed around at some point.

So if I was to buy the new radio unit from eBay or elsewhere would it just plug in and play? or would I need the trip to Audi to remove component protection to get it all back to working condition ?
From what I have read on the net I believe I need the radio unit to be there for the dab kit to work it piggy backs from that I believe
But many thankyou a to everyone that has commented so far it has been a great help and I greatly appreciate it
My next port of call is to get a new Becker radio unit and if I need to get the component protection altered by Audi ( blergh expecting that to be costly ) and if anyone has or can get a Vcds on my car that would also be very generous of them

I can't be sure but it might be possible for one our in-forum retro-installers to do the component protection rather than a dealer. Have a word with Nigel, aka @NHN.

The radio unit is plug and play in a sense. Disconnect the old one, remove from the rack, install replacement and then connect.

CP will kick in and your dashboard will be like a Christmas tree and display SAFE. You will know instantly if it has worked as you won't get the not installed message anymore but with CP active the radio will cut out every so many seconds.

Unfortunately CP can only be removed with VAS/ODIS with a live connection to the Geko server in Germany. The cost of this to indies is insane amongst other requirements so very few if any have it. Autologic advertise support but it can only handle 1st gen CP not 2nd used on our cars sadly.

Do you by chance have a rough idea of cost to do what I will need once the radio has been replaced ?

Thanks, @Slackworth, every day's a school day. :)

There doesn't seem to be a set charge. Some dealerships charge a full hour...some charge a little less. Figures I've seen banded around on forums tends to be anywhere between £60-85. Just to add insult to injury it's about a 10 minute job!!!! Even if you can't get to one of us friendly forum members, an indy will charge you £25 to do a quick scan.

This is why I would suggest getting a VCDS scan done first so we can confirm 100% the radio is dead. It does sound the case but I am still a little wary of the fibre network. Worth doing before you splash all the dosh on new hardware and a bonus for the service advisor at the local dealer ;)

Sounds like a plan to me Vcds required then what is needed from there I know @skiptowncat said he had Vcds and he was around Manchester I will try and use his generous offer dependant on what oil he would like with his reach around ! Lol

Just needs a full scan of the car...5 minute job and then we'll pretty much know instantly know what's wrong
