I am currently 19 & thinking about upgrading my car.

The insurance doesn't seem too bad for my age, I will be looking for the 140/170bhp S Line model, manual and probably 2007/2008.

Anyone have any information they can give me?

Thanks, Danny.

I bought my 170 quattro 2007 when i was 19. Insurance was surprisingly affordable at £1100 fully comp

You looking to buy quattro or standard as theres different stuff to look out for on each

Yeah insurance isn't too bad! Similar price for me, end of this year I'll have 3 years no claims as I had a bike before.

Looking at the standard one, guess there is more to go wrong with the Quattro and the MPG will be less I assume.

Nothing easier than gutting out the DPF mate. 140s (BKD) have terrible turbos and even worse injector problems. Also, early revisions have terrible cylinder heads.
Ah I see. Guess the DPF is pretty easy to clean out with a run down the motorway.

VCDS, fuel injection quantity / offset. The values should ideally be around 0, although I think anything up to +/- 3 is okay.

I mean if I'm going to look at a potential car.
All cars that had them shoud have been recalled by now and had them replaced free of charge but general symptoms are lumpy rough running and smokey.

Ah okay brilliant, that's the main thing to look out for then?

Still might for a 140 depends on what I see.

Yes lumpy tickover and an idle that jumps widlly, it should remain at around 800ish RPM, if it fluctuates up or down i would walk away.

Excellent I'll keep a look out, kinda want a dolphin grey one.

They look very nice. I was about to go for a dolphin grey one with the panoramic sunroof but ended up going for my avus silver one due to the two tone leather interior.

I currently have a black car and that's a pain to keep clean so definitely on the luck out for grey! Will be a big upgrade from a 1.4. Main reason for getting this car is for the mpg, I do 23k a year so will be able to save a lot. Any ideas on the average mpg on the 140&170?

Cheers, Danny.

My 170 quattro remapped around town gives 30. Motorway 55 on a long trip

i would say keep an eye out for the 170 models, i test drove a few of each and there really is quite a difference.
and if you're looking for this kind of car at this price, not many others out there offer the same power
the MPG is great too, ive had mine (170 sport) for a couple months now and if i take it easy i can get 55 going to work and back, only drops down to 38-40 ish if im really going for it. its saving me a fortune over my 1.4 mk4 golf, would have to drive like a granny to see 38 in that
good luck with your search buddy

Excellent cheers buddy, I'll keep an eye out, really wanna find one I like and test drive it. Post some pics up of your car?

Ah okay I have steering wheel controls on my current car and last night i realised I don't even use them so. Is there a difference between the radios on the 06/07 models?

Nope both are the double DIN with built in 6 cd changer as far as I know. 09+ have built in aux but I just bought a £12 cable now I can plug my phone in.

Before 06 are the crappy single DIN ones.

Ah I see! Think some 07/57 come with them though, so I'm guessing if it has the single din it doesn't come with aux?

What year is your car?

Ah right well guess I'll try find one with it in, not overly fussed but would be nice.

yep its worth looking for one with the double din Concert unit. not the end of the world if you dont but if you ever want to fit an after market unit it makes life so much easier. for £80 you can get the plastic surround and full wiring loom which works with the steering wheel controls.
a nice aftermarket unit looks just as good as the RNS-E and can give you a hell of a lot more features.
and once you have DAB you never go back...
