Temp Gauge intermittent, incorrect readings

Hi,

hopefully someone can help as i have tried searching and can't quite find what i am looking for. i am unsure if i am searching for the right thing or using the right words, but hopefully my description will help!

Car: a4 avant b6 1.8T bex engine.

my temp gauge has been intermittent the last few months. i will be driving along and it will slowly raise to around 70 degrees, then drop back to 50. after a few more miles it will raise to 90 and stay at 90.

i have checked to see if my engine is heating up correctly, and can confirm after using a diagnostics tool, that the engine does warm up, and it is intact the gauge not showing the correct temperature. this would leave me to believe that it is not a fault within in the engine, but rather wiring/instrument cluster/ecu?

Can anyone shed any light on this? any tips on what to check? or if anyone has experienced similar problems?

Common issue. new sensor or stat. what diagnostics did you use?

Do a search on here and you will find lots of info.

Nice motor.are those A3 speedlines? 18'a? spacers?
 
Thanks for the link, I had disregarded that sensor as I thought that would not allow a diagnostics tool to read the engine temp correctly at all?

Is that sensor likely to cause the gauge to not read correctly even when the ecu reads the engine temp correctly? I hope that makes sense?

They are also speedlines from an a5. 19x9j et33. Proper tight squeeze to get the car that low with the 255 tyres on...
 
How do you know the ecu is correct if the sensor is faulty?

what diagnostic tool you using?

From the above description its a classic temp and stat situation.cheap easy to do.
has it been P00 on fuel lately?

you need 235 35 19 tyres
 
Thinking about it, it has been rubbish on fuel recently. Best go to the dealers and get a sensor then!

255s fit now rolled the rear arches out a bit and removed the liner screws from the front and it now
Only rubs on the front over big bumps.
 
Sounds like thermostat to me
It's recommended to replace them every 4/5 years along with the cambelt but most don't bother
 
Normally if the sensors at fault it will move irratically and fluctuate.
Ive just had problems after a new stat and sensor,turned out the plastic housings locating lugs had broken and stuck in the stat.
Check this also :)
 
Fitted new sensor. Problem solved.. Although it took me three go's to get the right sensor!!!!
