1.8t, best oil currently

In theory,yes...;anyway,with oil changed every 5k it doesn`t matter :)
PS.-it`s Ferrari approved and please, don`t tell me VW excedess Ferrari...:)

Ash could you tell me what Ferrari oil spec it is and what Ferrari's it is used in ?

I can only think it's older ones when oil specs weren't so advanced .

If I had a Ferrari of any age a group 5 Ester oil £50- £80 for 5L is the only oil I would use.

Opie oils sells Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 as
2 X 5 LITRES (PLUS FREE 2 X 1 LITRES AND 2 POUCHES) for £57.95

So the question is would you put an oil that costs £24.15 for 5L in a Ferrari ?

I'm sure this is a case of marketing , marketing , marketing .

I totally agree with you , all I'm saying is there are better VW spec oils out there for the same money or less .

Yes there is but I pay 16.99 for helix and I change it 3000/4000 miles. Iv also used petronas in my other audi 1.8Na seems ok too. What I won't do is put crap oil in like motorsave sell ect.

Approvals:aceea A3/B4(not bad),porsche a40(not bad),ferrari(doesn`t say which one...)
http://www.epc.shell.com/docs/GPCDOC_GTDS_Shell_Helix_Ultra_5W-40_(SN_CF_A3_B4)_(en)_TDS.pdf

I agree with the marketing,it`s everywhere...

But like i`ve said,a decent oil changed every 5k it`s fine ;)

Yes the Ferrari approval won't be speced as it isn't an approval, it is a recommendation, so yes pure marketing given Shell's and Ferrari's relationship.

An approval is where a sample is analysed by Manufacturer and passed for mass production. Submission of the sample for approval carries a fee of maybe hundreds of thousands of pounds.

I was to torn between that and motul sport. This way I get a free 1L for any top ups!

Technically after an engine rebuild there should definitely be no loss! Using a decent ish motor factor oil as a day long flush

Gaz, have you heard anything about Penrite? It's an Australian brand, but all the performance workshops I've been to have used it over here. They swear by it. Also, since it's available at my local parts store I use it

I have now , had a quick look and both HPR 5 and Enviro+ 5W 40 are just a mere 502.00 505.00 .

We are being sold something , meaningless Ferrari recommendations , glossy packaging , glossy words , USP's , and it won't be fully synthetic at all but a group 3 mineral oil .

A group 3 mineral oil with a good additive package can perform reasonably well like 502.00 505.01 , whilst technically a group 4 synthetic with a poor additive package won't be as good .

But why have a better and more expensive basestock and then go and ruin it .

Is there better oil from them ?

That's more like it PAOs and Esters.

Still giving a low 502 505 classification and so are the other specs

It's Australian so it's confusing , lol .

I'm probably going to be running the first one mentioned in my car. Glad they impress although the classification isn't the greatest.

The basestock groups impress , I can only think the additive package isn't up to much as I mentioned that possible combination in post # 54 .

Could be marketing and USP as they are riding on the wave of stating the top 2 quality basestocks .

I would rather get the higher spec , better performing 502.00 505.01 5W40 Quantum Platinum .

5W40 ester oils listed by Opie Oils ,

Millers Nanodrive CFS , Red Line , Motul Sport Ester , Motul 300V , Fuchs TITAN Race Pro S and Gulf Competition

most of which don't have manufacturer approvals because they are beyond them in higher quality .

The Red Line did state 502.00 505.00 505.01 so probably one not to go for , for the money .

Bit more new info.

So as to the above Ester oils , there is as expected a bit of marketing involved.

There are no pure ester oils on the market , it would be stupidly expensive and using a blend of basestocks take advantage of the benefits of each one. Most are a blend of group IV and V, some are group III , IV and V blends and the ester content tends to be about 10-20%. The group III and IV oils help to make the oil last longer and make the additives more effective.

Which kind of puts into perspective how good 504.00 507.00 is by being groups III , IV and V .

Good oil indeed, it has lots Zinc antiwear additives.
