My 1.8 Auto failed it's test this morning. It's tested 'til June anyway but wanted to sell it with 12 months.

She failed on:

N/S/F lower control arm (front) dust cover split.
O/S/F wiper blade does not clear screen effectively.
O/S/F Wheel bearing has excessive play.
O/S headlight aim too high.
N/S headlight aim too low.

Not too bad. I was aware of the wheel bearing though. The rest I can sort myself.

So the question is do I pay to have the bearing replaced (quoted £150) or do I sell the car as is with the fail sheet so the new prospective can see what work is required before June 17th....?

I'm amazed you've got play in a front bearing.

I've had rear bearings on the quattro (same type as the front, dual race ball bearings) so noisey that it gave me sore ears driving the car, and yet they had no detectable play whatsoever...

If you want i've probably got a used control arm you can have for the cost of postage to fix that problem? For the bearing, maybe just get a cheap upright off ebay or whatever and swap the whole thing?

It had an advisory at the last mot for the front bearing and it is grumbly so it was expected I suppose.
You have just given me an idea.... Would an upright from a 1998 passat fit ok? The upper controls arm do as I've already pinched those. lol.

I will check their control arms and see what the have left, if not, I'll take you up on your offer Kev.

Cheers.

yep so long as the passat has the smaller 75mm wheel bearing to match your 1.8 hub then it'll work just fine :)

Control arms will work too, and the lower front one is not handed, so you can just whip it all off one side and swap the spare control arm onto the nearside.

Had a bit of a silly moment earlier. The car that failed is my Auto 1.8....not my 1.9tdi.
The passat is a 1.9tdi manual box....

Will they be still be the same do you think? I'm going to try and get the reg and compare part numbers.....

yeh they'll be the same, all 4 cylinder cars have 75mm wheel bearings, with the exception of those with the AJL (180hp) 1.8T motor.

go get stuck in :p

Just done a check on eurocarparts and it lists their passat at 82 mm not 75 mm.

Also said it was a 1999 model/year on an S plate. S761JUG.

Gutted, as I've been up and taken the strut off their car and have it in front of me.

Kev, please tell me that ecp is wrong!!! Lol

Cool, Cheers James.

I've almost got my old upright off. The hub does have a fair bit of play in it!

I tried pushing the drive shaft into the replacement upright and the splines wouldn't mate.....maybe need the bolt in and the upright semi secured before it will mate. Hopefully it will fit.
The part number on the legs are almost the same. Original one ends with the letter S and passat one ends with a T.

Theres only two outer flanges (one for 75mm bearings and one for 82mm bearings) and they're obviously different in size, so if it looks the same size it should fit just fine.

Well, it transpires (after partially fitting the leg) that the Passat one has a larger hub / cv joint so the splines won't fit from mine.

Looks like I will need to go down the route of getting a new bearing and having the old pressed out. At least I will save on labour as #i'll just take my old leg into the garage......

I can replace the bearing, if you don't mind the drive over.Just done both my front bearings.

Ah:

Seems AFN passat got the V6 uprights for some reason!

I should have checked for you earlier.

Just looked at the link and it's correct part number, ends with 'T'. Never mind, no worries but thanks for your help.

I've taken the leg to the garage who MOT'd the car and they are pressing one in for me, but thank you for the offer though. Appreciated.
