After 6 months of owning my new S3 I've had my house broken into by somebody who only took the keys and then the car. Within a few hours the thieving gits crashed it causing £20,000 of damage. Insurer has now written it off, stating they will give me a new one. Does anyone have any previous experience of this and what I should look out for, also would the insurer allow any changes i.e. colour?

Really depends on the insurance and whether claiming on a GAP policy. Some will just reorder your exact car, some will give you a cheque so you can do whatever you want.

Edit: sorry, that sucks :(

Sh************t ......that sucks. Good news that your OK though and they didnt get violent. Hopefully you will get a brand spanker very soon !!

Shame the sh**bags didn't write themselves off.

Pleased your family and you are fine my friend

Hope the catch the tw**s

Sorry to hear this, it is a pain in the ****.
As for insurance when I had a car written off I could go and buy what I wanted. They were just paying the invoiced price I originally paid directly to the dealer of whatever manufacturer I went with and I would pay any difference. So it's like starting all over again, you are not stuck with your original choice.
That was with Esure.

Sorry to hear that pal. There are some real scumbags out there

Sorry to hear this, but as others have said at least yuo and your family were unharmed. What insurance company are you with, maybe we can help you google it or read the T&C's and find the answer.

Sorry to hear this. Glad you weren't hurt though and at least you have a new car to look forward to and you should be offered a decent courtesy car too.

horrible people

Thank you everybody. I'm insured through esure, who have said because the car is less than a year old they will replace with new. Unfortunately esure will only cover a rental car for 21 days! Not a courtesy car because policy is effectively finished when the car is a write off. Does anybody now the build time for an S3 now? Really not looking forward to an 18 week wait again.

Sorry to read of your news. Where in the UK if i may ask, not that it matters, but for others to be vigilant.

Bad news indeed, good that you are all unharmed but pity about the car. Lets hope the new one is better...

I'm in Birmingham. The thieving tw**s also stole a 6 week old golf gti from the next road over on the same night

Funny thing is I got it in monsoon grey rather than sepang to purposely draw less attention

Police said that the best thing I could have done is left them by the door, because if they are prepared to break in then they would have been prepared to threaten me for them. The witness who called the crash in said they saw four men running from car after crash

Just to echo every one else, I'm so sorry to hear that your car was taken but the fact you and family are OK is good news, if there is any.

I would recommend checking with dealers, there are some stock S3's available, you will get a good deal on a stock vehicle so could get a better spec car. You might also want to enquire if any dealers have a stock order they can allocate to you. Doesn't have to be an S3 either you can then reconfigure it to suit yourself. I did this and got my S3 in around seven weeks.

Doesn't matter what colour or whether it's debadged or not, those who are looking to steal cars know exactly what they are.

Good luck Merino and let us know how you get on.. Was the car parked outside?

Erk, whereabouts?

Keep the car keys in some horrible trainers.
That's what I'll do.

Said this time and again - don't hide your keys! If someone is going to go to the extreme of breaking into your house for the keys, you want them to just take them and leave, not threaten you and your family for them. Yes it's horrible and I'd be gutted if it happened to me but, at the end of the day, it's just a car.

Read your insurance policy T&Cs thoroughly so you know exactly what you are entitled to.

My current car is with esure:

New car cover If your car is less than one year old and you or your partner have been the first and only owner and registered keeper, we will replace it with a new one of the same make and model if it has suffered damage covered by this section and the cost of repairing it will be more than 60% of the last United Kingdom list price (including taxes). We can only do this if a replacement car is available in the UK and anyone else who has an interest in your car agrees. If a suitable replacement car is not available, we will pay you the price you paid for your car and its fitted accessories and spare parts or the current manufacturers list price (including taxes) whichever is less.

As someone else has said, best bet will be to visit your local dealer and ask what is on the system and in the UK, I'm sure they will be up for helping you...it's another sale after all. If you got a good discount then esure will only give you what you paid (if no car is available), not what it cost before the discount. So I'd go for one that is as close to the spec you got.

Good luck.

My car insurance is with Churchill, and they state -

If a suitable replacement car is not available, or your car was not supplied as new in the UK, we will pay you the market value of your car at the time of the loss.

Makes you wonder just exactly how much effort an insurance company will make to source a brand new car when they can quite easily default to market value.

To the OP, please check your policy details closely and let us know the outcome. Good luck with your new car.

To Steph67, as a professional in the insurance industry, if you are reading this thread, maybe you could comment on how the whole "New Replacement Car" clause in policies is supposed to work, and how it actually works...thank you.

I have a similar thought process to you but ended up getting Sepang. If its going to get taken its going to get taken.

Agree with that.

B'ham is rife with this crap, the law is failing and these gangs know this. Glad you and family are ok.

I went with GAP + market value from insurance (prefer this than being forced to have a new car)

Little f****** thieving scummy b*******
Glad they didn't harm you etc. did you leave the keys visible and close to the door? If so, smart move....unless you're a UfC fighter, most people don't want to be trading blows during the early hours to save a car.

Hope you get a replacement quick.

My build was around 9 weeks from going into the showroom to the expected delivery date last week in March but that had a few options, maybe you get lucky and get a stock order..

Sorry to hear this and glad no violence was used.

I would be slightly happier hearing they smashed it up for a few reasons: I wouldn't want to have it back after the scum had been thrashing it about, if they had minor damaged it you would have a repaired car and wouldn't want that either, hopefully one or two of them was seriously injured in the accident like a facial deformation or similar to remind them they are a **** every time they look in the mirror, and they smashed it up so bad that it was a complete waste of time as they steal the cars to sell whole or parts off it so they achieved absolutely nothing!

I once went away and left my car on my mums drive , someone broke in and trashed the house looking for the keys but I had them on me whilst away. Luckily she wasn't in and the car didn't live there permanently but I'll tell you what the coppers told me , it's likely to happen again so beef up your home security . Once I told him it was just there whilst my sister gave me a lift to the airport he obviously told my mum to ignore that but I went home and got cctv and outside lights and security lights at the end of the drive also about to start having the wall built and electric gates maybe consider a dog if your work / social life allows it.

I know no one likes to hear the above but humans are creatures of habit..... Change the scenario and maybe the thieves will think twice and move onto the next house In future?

Hope you get everything sorted.

Sean is spot on,thieves do not like bright lights and any inconveniences to them make them doubt going for your car,

Happened to a mate of mine, he stayed upstairs to protect his wife & kids, but the silly burglar decided to go upstairs!!! BIG mistake :) My mate is ex-Parachute regiment and absolutely battered him lol. Two understanding Policemen came and took the guy away :)

No way I would leave my keys easily accessible. I'm not violent, but I'm a big guy, so if they were to get into my secure garage, move the other cars, break into the house and come looking after getting past my 2 big dogs, I'll happily protect my family by battering the little scrotes.

I'm glad you are all ok and metal can be replaced but stories like this makes my blood boil. It's an unfortunate fact of life, and although no guarantee of safety, I wouldn't have a car like mine unless it could be locked away and not on display. A lot of arguments against trackers, but at least it means a chance of bringing these low life to justice. There are also ones with additional immobilisation etc.......don't want to get into that debate on this thread but you might want to research if you're looking at additional security options.

Hope you're back on the road soon bud.

Good advice here.

John.

Any thing you can do to make them pass your car by and pick another to steal is worthwhile. Security lights, camera, locked gates or even a disklok would encourage them to walk on by. But as said if they really, really want it...... but most want want the added risk so it lowers the risk but doesn't remove it completely.

Just glad I don't have to leave mine outside.

sorry to read this..Dirty Rotten theiving Barstewards..hope they get whats coming to them..

also hope insurance sorts you out fast mate ;)

Sorry to hear about that, but hopefully the cops will catch them!
On the other hand, if you want a top spec Monsoon SB in a hurry, I'll sell mine for the right price ;-) Less that 4k miles on it too!
