MIJ performance.
Iv been looking at replacing my exhaust for a while now due to age and rattles, I had a look at the reviews for MIJ performance as a few guys had recommended them to me, I gave them a ring and spoke to Jay the owner, we spoke about the options I had and I explained that I already had a Milltek backbox, even though it was not made by MIJ performance he was more than happy to accommodate that into my system. We agreed on a great price and he booked it in for Saturday, bearing in mind it was Thursday when I called them so only 2 days notice which I was very happy about.
I dropped the car off Saturday morning at 9:00am when I arrived I was greeted by the secretary who was very pleasant and offered me a drink while I waited for Jay to speak to me about what there going to do. Jay showed me into the garage and talked through what I wanted to do with my car to make sure everything was correct. I went for the 3 inch TurboBack exhaust with the sports cat to a 3 inch mid section out to my Milltek back box, Jay had recommended this as it helps flow.
Jay advised me it will take about 6hrs to complete so I said I'd come back later. I arrived back about 5hrs later so I could have a look how there getting on, my old exhaust was removed and 3 guys working on the downpipe, but had not fitted it. At that point Jay saw me he wanted to get hold of me but unfortunately I forgot to leave my mobile number, he said they have hit a major obstacle and asked me to come out to the workshop to see the issue; normally to fit the exhaust downpipe on an S3 they undo the prop shaft and move it over slightly, giving enough space to easily fit in the downpipe and bolt it into place.
Due to my prop shaft bolts being seized they could not undo them and move the prop shaft over which meant they were struggling to get the downpipe in position to tac the individual pieces together, it's great how they do it as each piece is made from scratch bending and forming to the shape required, the downpipe looked like a smooth curve down to the flex joint where it would meet their sports cat. Now due to this issue with the prop shaft the only option would be to drop the steering rack and suspension to get around this, so I agreed to that and they carried on bearing in mind it was now getting late in the afternoon I was concerned my car would not be finished.
Jay had called there mechanic back in as he had finished a few hours earlier which I was very impressed with, it showed there great customer care. I went out for a while and came back at 5 and I could see the front of the car slightly hanging down enough for them to get enough space to get the downpipe tacked and ready to be welded, I was relieved as dropping the steering rack would have meant it needed to be 4 wheel aligned. Time was getting on it was after 6 but they were all still working away on my system which I was very surprised at as they close at 6.
2hrs later they had got the downpipe on the car and had made the rest of the system, the sports cat looks fantastic I'm really pleased with the fit, they then did all the final adjustments and locked it all up into place. It was now 9pm these guys had been working all day on my car and did not stop until it was finished, that truly is the best customer service I have ever experienced they had gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Jay dropped the car down and started it up and Disaster the backbox was rattling really bad, I was gutted and so was he, upon investigation he said the baffle had broke in the box and it was unusable due to this. I was now devastated talking to Jay he said I would have to have a new box but as I have been there so long and what I've had done he would give me a big discount on the new box.
He asked me where I got the back box and how much I paid and if I could get the money back for it, I said I'd just have to swallow the loss as the guy I bought it off packed it well in the packaging and it was more likely that the parcel monkeys had thrown it about causing it to break a baffle.
At hearing this I think Jay felt bad for me and what I would have to spend and shocked me by offering me an amazing solution and would save me spending any more money I couldn't afford to spend, he offered to come in on Sunday when there closed and if we could work together and cut open the box and see if we can weld the baffle back in place. I obviously jumped at the opportunity and met him there Sunday at 1pm, we jumped right in and Jay cut open the box I was like his apprentice lol, we found that the baffle plate with the C shaped bend that links the 2 perforated pipes had come off, this could only have happened by it being dropped heavily which explains my parcel monkey theory, they must have just threw it out of the back of the delivery van at the depot.
Anyway after an hour of forcing this pipe back into position we finally got it in, Jay welded it with his high quality skills, got it all seem welded and sealed the backbox up after refilling it with some quality wadding. After everything was welded back together we drop the car down I got in started it up and revved it up for a bit to check for leaks Jay gave it a good once over and there were no leaks and the exhaust sounded fantastic.
I drove it home and gave it a bit of a run to see what it felt like and it's noticeably quicker and feels so much more responsive. I'm over the moon with the new system.
I'd just like to say a massive thanks to Jay and his mechanic who also came in Sunday to recheck the bolts he removed to make sure they were torqued up to the correct amount.
I really can't recommend Jay and MIJ performance enough they have really gone out of there way to help me out and really put themselves out working late into the evening and even Sunday, it's so rare to find people with such a passion for there job than Jay and his staff.
